Hi everyone,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this thread so apologies in advance if not.My question is simple however. How does TGO compare to other outdoor magazines eg Trail and where is the best ( ie cheapest!! ) place to subscribe from?
Any advice appreciated very much.

this months subscription page has some interesting maths - you're definitely on your own trying to work that out!

Cameron has posted on these forums recently that YHA members and some other organizations get a subscription discount and if memory serves correctly (Dave help me out here as I think you did ask and get the answer) that OM members could get a discount.
Subcribe to TGO it's good value and you skip the hassle of trying to locate a copy.

Yes Cameron did say OM members get the same discount :)))))))))

thats great thanks very much for the advice and info. One last thing....does the magazine have a homepage or anything? I have tried to subscribe online but dont seem to be getting anywhere.Needless to say the link from this site is down.

They will do soon. They are in the process of developing the site at the moment. And I believe going live soon. At the moment it is just temporary so an online copy of the Austria supplement is available as promised to the Austrian Tourist board.
I should point out I'm nothing to do with the mag. But just a loyal reader throwing out bits of info picked up from these forums.

Hi Roi, I've been away so just picked up your message. A year's sub to tgo would cost you £22 - an an OM member. There's a subs form in the current issue of the mag - fill it in and just put a line on it to say you're a member of Outdoor Magic.com. We're busy working on our website at the moment - tgomagazine.co.uk. Should be up and running by the end of July. Until then we have a holding page, with our recent Austrian supplement on it in PDF form.

I'm glad I dug this thread out, as your links on the site here don't really work. The click through gives details about April's edition and the subscriber services goes to a rather muted looking Newsquest website. As this gives contact details I may try and arrange a subscription that way. As an aside, after ages of silently joining in the gripes about Trail in the forums I have decided that the July edition is my last and it is time to get to TGO for perhaps more grown up reading!

Now...if it was a cumulative discount for membership, then that would be fun ;-)
I was thinking of subscribing, and some TGOs started arriving through my door with an NTS cover on the front. I couldn't remember subscibing, but must have done. So I put it down to missing time, checked myself for alien probes, and thought "fair doos".
A few months later I get a letter saying my freebies had run out and would I like to carry on at xx quid. "fair doos" I thought again as I like the magazine.
I got a free Colin Prior panorama too.
I find it a lifestyle magazine rather than a fitness magazine. It may mean that I now have a life outside work.

after ages of silently joining in the gripes about Trail in the forums I have decided that the July edition is my last and it is time to get to TGO for perhaps more grown up reading!Funny, I thought exactly the same... cancelled my Trail subscription two days ago and subscribed to tgo ;-)) I used the "subscribe to tgo"-button on the right hand side of their website, which took me to this page: http://www.shoppersworld.co.uk/store/dept.asp?s=455&d=2641I clicked on the 1 year Sub Club Members subscription (£ 25), but at no stage of the subscription process I had to enter any membership no.? Hmmm... strange.

I haven't read TGO this year at all. Last one I read was November-ish. I've picked it up in the newsagents, had a quick flick, seen nothing that interests me (except Mike Harding) and put it back.

I'm coming back to it after a good few years with Trail (I too have cancelled, but subscribed to the US Backpacker magazine for a change). I buy TGO every month and totally enjoy it although I do find it a little Scotland centric. But that's just selfish! If Cameron McNeish was called Rhodri Ffynnongroyw, I'd be a happier man ;)

although I do find it a little Scotland centric
And that's exactly what I like about it, hehe... ;-))

 Ditto above titter,titter.....

Chris - Cameron doesn't believe there are mountains south of Scotland :-)

Roi, before I get sidetracked, my advice is yes, subscribe. There'll be things about it you like, aspects you hate, but overall it's worth what it costs.
Until recently I had subs to both TGO and Trail. When the Trail subscription ran out, around January time, I decided not to renew, mainly because I can always pick up Trail from any number of outlets if I want to.
In the first month after the subscription lapsed, I bought the mag sometime around the 10th of the month. The following month I didn't get around to it until about the 20th. The month after I missed it completely, realised that I wasn't actually much fussed, and haven't bought it since.
Whether this proves anything, other than that habits can be broken, I'm not really sure. But I couldn't imagine doing the same thing with my TGO sub.

There's always Country Walking if TGO is too rough.........

I have been buying CW but with only one or two Scottish walks it just isn't worth it.
