It will be a team of second stringers due to the date its being played.

Although if the best GB  team was picked on abilitiy only welshman Gareth Bale would get in.

They Might go for a Scottish Goalkeeper.

Check out number of goals scored for time on pitch.?
It rules out most of the so called top strikers.Cheers

Only one Welshman? What about Giggs? He plays for Wales IIRC. Or are you making the point that he isn't really a Welshman Nick?? Didn't he play for England schoolboys? Hmm, could have a point Nick.

ANyway, I thought that the Scottish and Welsh FAs have denied it was happening or has something changed since I heard that the other day??

I seriously doubt any premiership club will allow their expensive British stars release for a GB game at the Olympics. You will end up with Championship players or more Scottish and Welsh in the team I reckon!! I really would like to know what a British "dream team" would actually look like IF they managed to get one with the best British players not just the best players they could get after club and national FAs have had their restrictions applied. Hope it happens.

Giggs is indeed Welsh.

He played for England schoolboys because he went to school in... England.

Even in this wee part of the UK, Norn Iron, don't want a 'comprise' team. As others have said I don't think many Premiership players, (prima donnas), would/be allowed to take part. They might ruin their hair or get their kit dirty!!

Picking a team from a nation just because the player is English, N. Irish, Scottish, or Welsh is stupid. Not only may it not be the best team, they may not 'get on' causing fritcon in the team.

Also what will happen about 'caps', after 17yrs old as long as you don't have a 'full' cap, if your Grandparents, Mother, or Father where born in the UK or hold a 'full' Uk passport, you can opt for which country you play for.

Or if you move to the UK, take UK citizenship, wait a few years, you can play for a UK country, ("English" cricket team?). If you get a UK cap, would that mean you could play for any of the 'home' countries you want? Or could you only play for a 'UK' team?

Actually I don't want a British team to be set up. My reasoning is I don't like football and since at none of the other Olympics we had a team the amount of footie shown on the coverage was pretty low. IF we get a team then I suspect it will be the whole competition being shown. I think Scots, Welsh and NI FAs are right to not want a British team. Anyone who doesn't like football has enough of the carp about it through the season then all the analysis for a few weeks after then the build up for the new season and anything about transfers. That is before internationals, friendlies, testimonials and international club ouir country competitions are talked about. Heck it seems the footie season is lasting all year these days. Can't we have a nice, footie free Olympics at least and get to watch more of the so called minority sports we never get to see normally. I mean I'd prefer beach volleyball over football any day for the week (BTW only the womens competition as I think that is more competitive and entertaining on a purely competitive point of view!!)

Roll on 2012! You'll see me there, I have tickets. Too my living room or the pub that is. Never put my name down. Reckon you'll see more on TV ans you also get the technical and statisitics from those who know what they are talking about too.

It would be the current English team plus Gareth Bale.Giggs maybe. If the premier clubs release players for friendlies why not the Olympics. With the current set up in fifa it will be the only major tournament in the u.k in our lifetime.

Mick Drey, Norn Iron is the way a lot of peeps who live here, or are from here say Northern Ireland. HTH.

LiL, yea to much football on. I'm not a fan of it either, when asked "what team do you support" and I reply "none, don't follow football", I get looked at like I've got 3 heads!!!

Think I'm even more crazy than ever, because I'm already "nuts" for going climbing, hill walking, etc.!

Is it not the case that it's an Under 23 team for the Olympics?

Men's teams are allowed to augment their squad with three players over the age of 23.

I think it's a special rule to allow David Beckham to get in there somehow.

Football shouldn't be an 'olympic' sport, but then neither should a lot of others! If you can't imagine Achilles and Hector having a go at it during a break in the siege of Troy, bin it.

Synchronised swimming? Can't see them doing that. Buggering about on kids' bikes? No BMX either!

etc...
