Planning a solo trip on limited time in late august, using public transport from Orkney..... not easy! Anyway, here's the idea.... (sitting at work without OS map to hand, so description not as detailed as might have liked )
Thurs 1100ish - Arrive at Ardgay Railway Station. Head by mountain bike towards Glen Alladale. Planning to head west up rib of hill which seperates Glen Alladale from Gleann Mor, making my way - in a leasurely manner - towards Carn Ban, onto Seana Bhraigh and back.
Don't have to be back at Ardgay until 3pm on Saturday, so planning to have couple of nights on the hill. Any advice for best wild camp spots/terrain to avoid etc...
Fionn the area of the hill you plan to climb has an extensive area of electric fencing, or had a couple of years ago. I know that the Estate has changed its plans for a zoo at the moment but I would expect that the fence still exists. The Estate roads are in good condition and you can easily cycle up Gleann Mor and even into Gleann Beag. I've never camped in that particular area but there are plenty options.
The easterly section of Seana Bhraigh is quite narrow and steep as it heads towards Loch a'Choire Mhoir.
The only downside with your plan is that Alladale do lots of stalking so I would give them a call before setting out and see what they say. Lots of Estates are very helpful during the stalking season and may suggest alternative routes.
Struggling a bit to establish exact extent and position of current fence. I can probably check that nearer the time when I check stalking details, but if anyone had a link to relevant map that would be handy (only maps I can find are of proposed new fencing arrangements - but given those were just approved at the end of last year I'm not sure if they're in place yet)
The fence between Glen Alladale and Gleann Mor starts close to Alladale Lodge and goes west for around 1.5 kilometres and encloses the whole of that section of the hillside. It is 6-8 feet high. The problem crossing it is that the electric wire is set back from the top of the fence making it very difficult to cross.
I climbed Carn Ban walking in from Alladale through Gleann Mor. On my return I stayed on the east ridge until I knew I was approaching the fence then dropped down into Gleann Mor just beside the edge of the fence.
You would only need to cycle a short way up Gleann Mor before diverting onto your planned route although the gradient is a bit steep.
Seanna Bhraigh is my favourite munro; the view from the top is overwhelming. We're hoping to camp right on the top some time this year - can't think of a better place to wake up if you're in the neighbourhood, so if you have time I'd suggest you consider the same. There's a decent enough ring of stones at the summit to give you a little shelter, plenty of soft flat grass to pitch on and water a km or so away in various directions. It is just such a splendid splendid hill and a great prize; take your time and enjoy.

Heartily agree with that. An ambition of mine too.
Lindsay - Thanks very much indeed for the pics - much appreciated. Seeing those, and spending a considerable part of my working day peering at google map satelitte images, I was thinking that skirting around the fence from a wee bit along Gleann Mor would be the best option right enough (such a shame, when the hill ramps so beautifully up from the very mouth of Gleann Mor)....... or I could just take me bolt-cutters!
ALoveSupreme - watch out, that kind of enthusiasm is contagious! Aye, that sounds like a fine plan, but not sure how it'll fit in with my timescales - wouldn't want to travel that far in by teh Thursday night, and on the Friday night I might want to be a bit further back east, for an easy stoll/freewheel cycle back to Ardgay. The whole north face of the massif appears to have great views, so I should be spoilt for choice - only downside is that I see my emergency bolthole of the Glenbeg bothy will be closed then for stalking season - Coiremor still open till early September, but no quite so handy for my plans.
Ah now, I was just reading that report the other night - a cracker btw, with super pics. I did wonder whether I might be missing the finest aspect of the mountain.... oh well, can't have it all I guess!
