Hi,
Myself and a couple of friends are heading out to the Pyrenees this Monday to do some trekking in the Aneto and Perdido area, hopefully taking in a few major peaks and we were wondering what the situation is with rescue if things did happen to turn bad? Is there an equivalent of mountain rescue over there? And does it have a charge?
It is leaving it a bit late to find out but it would be really comforting to know what the story is before heading out there.
I would be very grateful for any information.
Thank you,
Tom Timberlake

Hi Tom,

I've been out there a few times and yes there is rescue services but I'm not sure of the number. When you mean go bad I assume you mean accident? If so I wouldn't be going anywhere without insurance. I always use BMC as they cover a multitude of areas and are always very helpful on the phone.

I was at Aneto back in Septemeber and the weather was quite mixed (27 deg on arrival an -9 on departure with some snow). There were a load of rescue personnel at refugio de la renclusa, which is I assume a hut they use for there base when training. I've stayed there too and it was pretty good. Good food, beer and wine and well located. If it's the first time you've been then you can also pick up supplies at a town called Benasque which is on the way through - but don't forget siesta!! It's a challenging area but some stunning scenery and I'm sure you'll love it!

Enjoy!

Thanks a lot,
It's very useful to hear about the sort of weather you encountered at that time. We have all got BMC insurance, which as you said, seems to be the best for this sort of thing. I have now managed to locate 2 rescue numbers for that area: 112 for the French rescue and 062 for Spain so that has put my mind at ease a bit more!
We will be camping next to Renclusa which seems like a great place and we will have to be prepared from any weather by the sounds of it!
Really looking forward to it!...

There's lot's of water around the hut and in downpours it can flood very quickly (which happened a fair bit so be careful where you pitch. I'm not sure how they'll take you pitching there too plus it's not that flat.

The boulder field over the ridge can take some time to cross so make sure when heading for Aneto you stay high and right or you'll waste a lot of time "boulder hopping"

Any more questions give me a shout.
