First off, apologies for 'kinda' duplicating the thread and posting another 'what to do on my scotland trip' thread, but I didn't want to hijack other threads and this is alittle different.

As discussed before the missus/wife/boss has had serious back problems.  Turns out she has Osteo Arthritis at the tender age of 28!  This is obviously a bit of a shitter, she does struggle with uphill jaunts, sometimes and we obviously need to be careful.  However, she does need to excersise.  We just can't tell how she's going to be until the morning and even then it can change.  To give an example, on sunday she woke up in agony but insisted we go and do a gentle walk in the peaks, on route she decided that she wanted to try Kinder via Grindsbrook clough, nothing extreme I know but for someone with a spinal issue its not easy, anyway, she was fine.

So we're off to the highlands in 2 weeks, a postponed trip.  We have 4 days in Applecross, which is pretty much planned out.  Then down to the Isle of Mull for a 2 night stay at a hotel with a Spa (great deal found online) to rejuvinate.  Then we have another week with no real plans.  We'd like options at this point.  We don't know how her back will be so need to have various paths available.

It could be that she's feeling great and wants to do more walks, in which case we need a few suggestions for various places to go for a couple of nights and walk.  We also need ideas of things to do that are outdoorsy but not going to ruin her back.

Any interesting ideas are greatly appreciated and will really help us out.  We've just bought a new car and are looking forward to tearing around scotland, so anywhere, within reason, is open to explore.

That is all.

I sympathise - I've had osteo-arthritis in the back (facet joints) for some years. Tell her not to get depressed about it - many people manage their condition and live with it through a combination of keeping their weight down, good stretching exercises (get a good physio), plus taking glucosamine and chondriotin and/or celadrin.

As for your questions, how about a week on Islay? Nice island, some good beaches, and lots of walking options, including gentle ones if that's what's needed, or more challenging ones (e.g. the Paps of Jura).

My experience is only through listening to people who have
similar problems.
Keeping a full flexing of the problem joint seems to produce
the best results. For instance if it takes two minutes to fully
bend down to touch the floor,or bend and straighten the arm
let it. If you continue regularly ,the movement will improve
the pain will lessen or both. But you have to persevere .
Black Sailor has some good advise, after all professionals
should know best.Doing nothing but swallow pain killers is not the answer. Cheers

Cheers for the sympathy and advice guys.  She has been really really good with diet and excersise.  She knows that pain-killers wont help, she has quite a tough job and being spaced out on Co-dydramol and amitryptaline aren't an option.  Pilates, Yoga and walking are all helping greatly.

Islay sounds great, however, we do fancy a few different places on a route across to the East coast, mainly because we have friends in Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh and would like to visit a couple if not all of them.

The Cairngorms seems to obvious a choice, we'd like to look at other, less touristy places.

They might be a little touristy but the lower level woodland stuff (Birch or Caledonian) in the Spey valley really is lovely.

Try and get a hold of a copy of Scotland The Best. Tons of ideas in there.
