hi guys, well, my other posts returned fantastic advise ( cadair idris this weekend, cheers) anyway,
to get my weekend away from wifey n kids i have agreed to take wife n kids up a mountain, so decided on Cadair Berwyn as looks easy enough for them kids are 4 and 7 btw, but very outdoory kids so i think they will be ok, plus that pistyll ...... waterfall is nearby as is camp site for the night ( kids will love that bit) waterfall if for the wife, errr, not me obviously..ahem.
so about waffle, main q are,
1, anyone think this mountain/hill is going to be harder than i think ??
2, if its ok, where would be the closest place to park to it and a possible better route to take.
I found it quite a slog but I took the slightly longer route to the left following the stream. I cant think of any shorter routes up, unless you walk to the little lake below the summit and go straight up the steep flank (there's a faint path). The views are very nice.
There's a pretty easy route that more or less follows the ridge from Milltir Cerrig, the boggy bits have been replaced with board walk which ought to be a breeze. That means you can then dip down to the lake have a picnic a little climb back up and then it's a fairly level walk back to the car.
I went up via Pistyll Rhaeadr and Moel Sych in summer and it was very boggy.I know someone above said it's been boarded but I'm not sure if it's that section.I am planning to take my daughter up Moel Siabod, for me it's got an easy scramble right to the summit, some old mine workings and a different route up and down, i reckon Cadair Berwyn is quite a hike and other than the waterfall at the start there's not much for kids until just after Moel Sych. I reckon Cnicht is also a winner, a proper summit loads of really interesting mines and caves, a different way up and down an very short too, but can be done in a nice leisurely fashion.
thanks for the advise, i think i take a look at Cnicht, i have done siabod many years ago and although i have about 20 pics of every mountain i did, i never did write anything down about them so i really cant remember it much except im sure it was snowing !
If you park at Croesor and walk up Cnicht and then over to Rhosydd quarries and then down back to Croesor, everyone's a winner. The Summit of Cnicht is about half way, the quarries about two thirds and then and then 2 miles back to the car.
Once the nippers have seen the waterfall it will all probably be an antri climax after that.It is quite impressive.
thanks again, sounds ideal, will that route pass by the caves and mines ?
After you followed the ridge NE for a while you can descend as you see fit to the quarry at SH 665 462 there are a few vague paths but nothing concrete so pick the driest route, it's a pretty stunning spot with a a few nice bits of open water to walk between. After that quarry there's a path to another quarry at SH657 455, that path then goes back down to the car park at Croesor.
