As my usual IT consultant is away with some of his other year 11 buddies celebrating the end of GCSEs by partaking in Bulgarian booze.... I have a load of DVDs I want to rip to a portable hard drive - then run them off the hard drive. Been piddling about all evening trying to get it to work, but I am almost pooter illiterate..... Can someone tell me how to do this please - including a free ripper download if needed!

Check out DVD Shrink to extract the video from DVD. ImageBurn is another popular offering After that depends on what format type you want to end up with Check here to get some idea of whats what and look for "Open source" offerings

That last link is written in pure Geek - I can't understand it at all. GOM - I use Jesterware's DVD ripper. OK, it costs $30 but it is a lot easier, more reliable and quicker to use than any of the free offerings that I've encountered. No connection, just think it's a good product.

Imtoo offer a selection of packages that will do the job very easily and fairly inexpensively http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-ripper.html

A Google search seems to reveal likely free candidates... Never used any of them. Don't get me started ripping DVDs, please; I'm having enough OCD trouble with the CD library...

GOM, if you are using a version of Windows. What I do is rip CD to Media Player, then use playlist, to burn to selected media, CD, MP3 player, Memory Stick, etc. Usually works, unless there is a Digital Rights Management, on the CD you are wanting to burn. Paul

CP, I've done the same for burning DVD's to disc. Biggist problem is DVD's have more DRM than most CD's. Possibly some of the 'freeware' programs may be able to over come that issue. I don't know, as I haven't used them. I don't copy many DVD's. The ones I have copyed have been from my 'back up', on line or from disc/s, memory sticks, etc. As they are from a back up, seems to get around DRM, as you are 'restoring' files to disc. Not "really burning" them. As I say, might work, worth a try to see if it does! If it doesn't all you've lost is some time. Paul.

There is a difference between providing a different video version of a dvd and copying one. The software i use is quite happy, so far, of converting a dvd to an alternate video format (at the same quality e.g. H.264) but won't copy a dvd to another.

The best freeware I've come across for ripping DVDs (including those that are copyright protected) is a piece of software called Handbrake which works with VLC, another piece of software that plays any video format. Both are free to download.

http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm Download DVDFab HD Decrypter Install it Insert dvd Run DVDFab It scans the dvd and then gives you a choice of disc to disc or disc to files and also what size to end up with eg: single layer dvd or double layer dvd. Simples
