I'm prompted by this OM thread which warns of noisy nights at the campsite in Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

A group of us are planning a weekend walking from Edale later this summer. Are there any campsites in that area we should avoid? Or, conversely, any that you guys particularly recommend?

Also, is wild camping OK on, or around, Kinder Scout. We'd pitch late, strike early, and leave no trace but there'd be a group of us in several tents.

Upper Booth is usually quieter than the campsites in Edale village at peak times, but take your own beer.  As for wild camping, no problem on weekdays or at weekends once the Rangers have all buggered off in the evening.  There's a flat area east of the Fairbrook which will take a group and is ok after a dry spell, also plenty of scope around Brown Knoll.

Kinder Scout is a toilet. Don't drink the water.

Can't help with the first question, although the site at Upper Booth looks pretty quiet to me.

Re wild camping up on Kinder, it's not allowed, and the rangers are quite hot on it - I've heard reports of them patrolling in the evenings and making wild campers pack up and move on

Is "I love Mrs Cooper" still scrawled on the back of the door in trap no1 of the Gents?

There are a few farms around Edale that offer very basic facilities and are not very busy generally, sometimes almost deserted when the bigger sites are full.

Upper Booth is generally full quickly but if you can get in, you can find some great little pitches by the river that are generally ignored by the car campers.
