 Hi Chris,
Have a look at the following for quite a good explanation to the legal aspects of wild camping in the uk.
http://v-g.me.uk/WildCamp/WildCampLegal.htm
IIRC Scotland is a bit different so have a look at the following for some info on wild-camping in scotland.
http://www.mountaineering-scotland.org.uk/leaflets/wildcamp.html
You're unlikely to find anyone here who'll openly publish camping locations as it's a good idea to not publish good wild camp locations, if however you get a better idea of where you want to go then i'm sure one of the guys or gals on this site will drop you a email with a possible camp site.
The following links may also be helpful.

Hope this helps,
Jason

Hard to put a figure on it, have a look through the gear area and forum for recommendations.
Also if inistially your only planning to go in the summer you may get away with some cheaper stuff a lot of outdoors shops have sales on at the mo.
Some the guys we talking about cheap kit from places like Lidl and argos (inc a cheap tent for about £30 IIRC).
At the end of the day pay what you can afford, you will get what you pay for but it will allow you to get out there sooner and you can then save and replace things as and when you need to.
The tent they were on about was

and discussed here
http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forummessages/mps/dt/4/UTN/4683/srchdte/0/last/1/V/1/SP/
and i just checked and that tent is now 14.99 here's the link

They also have some some rucksack going cheap.
Do a search on there site for Rucksacks, they have a few 65 litre Karrimors which may do you for now.

Thats a nice tent. I think i will be venturing to argos tomorrow :)
what do you think i would need to take for a weeks trip in terms of clothes. I would of course buy some good quality hiking boots, but say 2 pairs of trousers and 3/4 shirts, plus a lightweight jacket and a water proof set?

I'm sort of in the same boat as you as i'm just gearing up to my first longish hike.
I think a good rule of thumb would be to have a min of 3 i.e. 1 on 1 dirty and 1 spare/emergency.
2 x trousers should ge ok, remember it's summer so you could also toss in a pair of lightweigh shorts.
You'll probably need 3-4 pairs of socks + liners.
In terms of shirts/tops make sure you get proper outdoors t's or tops (no cotton, well maybe one for the evening or pub) they keep ypu dryer and tend not to smell as bad after a couple of days walking and they dry fast.

 Assuming wild camping:
Err I travel lighter than that. One pr trs, one pr shorts - you can wear the shorts if the trs are in the 'wash' and put the waterproof over trs on top if it's cold or windy. Or the thermal leggings under if it's winter and you're carrying them. Or wear them dirty - who's gonna see them?
One base, one polartech 100-weight top plus down jkt if cold (compresses down lovely and also makes good pillow). Extra 100/200 top if cooler weather and to keep cosy in camp if no down jkt.
Obviously light and v. compressible waterproof top and trs.
Wet wipes for cleaning self and for hands after poo stops. Lighter for stove and to burn paper after poo stops. Extra tent peg for digging holes for poo. Deodorant roll-on essential if not changing top. Other toiletries not. Decant some aftersun into a nalgene container and use as general moisturiser - days of fresh air and sun play havoc with skin. Sun screen also in nalgene. Midge spray!! Ponytail band for long hair when you can't wash it.
Decant wine into platypus with screw top to celebrate first night out and use for water storage overnight afterwards - purifying tablets take time to work so I have one container ready and one 'purifying' after first day. I am always amazed how many cheering cups of tea I drink while camping.
One thing I don't skimp on is socks - 3 prs cos I like a fresh pair every day and one can always be drying off tied to rucky after washing.
