I'm going trekking in Ladakh for three weeks in late August / early September, but I'm finding it hard to find up-to-date information. I've been trekking in Nepal before, where there are loads of villages where you can stay and buy food, but I'm not sure of the situation in Ladakh. I'm thinking of doing the 'Across Zanskar' trek, and my guidebook suggests that you need to take your own provisions for most of the route. However, it was written about five years ago and more recent threads on web forums seem to suggest that you can actually stay in villages and buy food in a number of places now. Does anyone know the current situation? Anyone been there recently?
I was planning to take my tent and I'm happy to carry several days-worth of food, but I think a long trek without being able to re-supply might be a bit of a push!
Also, has anyone else been out there recently who recommends other trekking routes? I'd be interested to know what comes with an OM seal of approval!
Hi Susan, I did the Darcha-Padum-Lamaryuru trek 10 years ago and have since done several treks in Ladakh until children turned up 5 years ago... As it was; horses were kind of necessary but according to my friends who are regular travellers to that area, you can get re-supply especially from Padum to Lamayuru... My mates usually take a horseman and food haul to the top of the Shingo la during acclimatisation so they go slow with luxuries and then cut free with supplies after the pass but get away with not carrying too much uphill ... Also worth posting a message on http://www.trekinfo.com to get more info... .. there are plenty other Trek info sites that are probably far more useful than OM Good luck and enjoy....
