Hi all I'm off to the Snowdon area 2nd week September, based in Llanberis but with a car. I have 2 full days and a couple of half days free. I'm looking for something high and challenging that will look good on my ML logbook, I guess I should do Snowdon, what is the most interesting route? Once that is out of the way what else should I be looking at? The Glyders look interesting on the map, what do folk think? Cheers guys Steve D

Hi Steve it has to be the full Snowdon horseshoe if u want to impress then taking in Crib Goch if u have a head for heights and love to scramble then onto Crib dasyl (spelling sorry) up onto the summit of Snowdon and keep going round, cant rember other tops names sorry. Next days challenge Tryfan north face then up onto Brystly ridge and onto the glyders. Both the best days scrambling to be had.

I'd have thought a day out in the Carneddua would be wise for ML stuff. If it clags in you'll need your nav skills.

Sounds good Didders, now what to do with my two half days (I have one at each end of the trip - of course the last one I may just lie in). Cheers Steve D

Kelvin hopefully I will have a couple of days Navigation 'polishing' with Phill George, but thanks for the advice. Steve D

Half day? Got to be Moel Siabod. Up the Daear Ddu Ridge (keep far right and take everything head on to maximise the interest) and back down the East Ridge. Cracking stuff.

Get yourself along the Nantlle Ridge Make it a beast of a horseshoe by linking it with Moel Hebog, Moel yr Ogof and Moel Lefn first (or after!) Or at least do Hebog and its neighbours for a half-day. Oh, and I agree with Moel Siabod. Or get some grand nav practice around Cnicht and the southern Moelwyns....

You could also do the Llechog ridge from Llanberis pass, over to Clogwyn Du'r Arddu (aka Cloggy), the east ramp up, up Snowdon and then back down via Crib Goch's North Ridge to take you back down in to the pass again. All good hearty grade 1 scrambling and off the beaten track.

I did the Watkin path the other week and was surprised at how good it was, you can take in Yr Aran and Y Liwedd to make a full day of it. Snowdon horseshoe is a fine route but I agree with Dids about Tryfan.Cannon stone,Adam & Eve,Sinister gully and the cantilever stone all amongst the best grade 1 in Wales. I would also carry on to Y garn to add another 3000er. Elidr Fawr and Cnicht are good half dayers, I think Mrs N might be right about Moel Siabod, it's highly rated and is a shortish route I will be doing soon with my littleun.

Or Lechog Buttress is a nice grade 2/3 (ok, a couple of bits not quite so nice in the wet ) Traversing over from the base of Crib Goch North Ridge to Llyn Glas and down Cwm Glas Mawr, or descending from Clogwyn Station down Cwm Glas Bach at the side of Lechog Ridge - both definitely show you some of the wilder side of Snowdon.

Great stuff guys (gals?) I think I am going to enjoy this little jaunt! Steve D

I still Think the North ridge of Tryfan, Glyders and Y Garn is the best day walk I have ever done and is more fun than the Snowdon Horseshoe, but the Horseshoe is probably as classic and dramatic looking walk as you could do in Wales so if you do both you will have had a pretty good time.

The Snowdon Horseshoe is a good walk, but try and do it on a week day if you can -- it can get a bit mad at weekends ime. And put a bag on your head at the summit of Snowdon, so you miss the crowds and "facilities".

Thanks Guy I'm going to be there midweek, arriving Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with Phill George and flying back from Manchester Friday evening, hence the half days each end. I still expect it to be busy but maybe not as busy as the w/e. Steve D
