Hi everyone,

I am going for 2 weeks in the Pyrenees at the end of the month. Staying in Aramits just by the border of the west side of the range.

I have a lot of experiance in the UK hills walking and wild camping but I have never ventured to the big peaks and the Pyrenees is my first forey. I am excited and a litte nervous

Anyway my question:

I have been swatting up on the mountains and potential routes and I notice that the majority of routes are at least 2 day excursions with stop off's at the refuges. I would prefer to do some high peaks that are only one day excursions but these are hard to find due to the long walk in's e.t.c

I have found 2 routes so far:

"Le Lurien" in the Ossau region. Around 10km with 1550m of ascent from "Lac de Fabreges"

"Le Taillion" in the Gavarnie region (my first 3000m peak). Around 10km with 900m of ascent from "Col de Tentes" car park.

These are around my level without pushing myself too hard and knackering myself up and wasting (good mountain and biking) days recovering.

I am amazed how little good route information for the pyrenees there is on the net. Searches like "Walking routes in the Pyrenees" just seem to produce page after pages of walking holidays.

Any good route advice and/or links would be helpful thank guys

I've got the cicerone book that Ivo linked. It's a great place to start.

There is information but most of it is in French but there are plenty of ascensions to be done in 1 day.

This site has lots of walks on it.

http://philrando.free.fr/index.html

Le Taillon is easy and is a lot of peoples first 3000, but be careful going up to the breche de roland at that time of year it could get cold and crampons MAY be needed to cross the glacier

Summitpost has quite a number of good descriptions.

This is a peak that I particularly enjoyed :

I have just brought the Cicerone book and while excellent it still is a little short on the one day routes.

This site http://philrando.free.fr/index.html is brilliant and the kind of thing I was looking for.

I didn't realise summit post went into so much detail.

Ivo great site and pictures thanks.

This is where google translation comes into it's own

Lot's to work with thanks guys

Yes I have found that site and it's one of the best mapping sites I have ever used. Technically superb! Yet it is so hard to find via a normal web search!

If only I could transfer it's maps to memory maps for my GPS.

The French IGN maps do exist and can be purchased for memory map at a scale of 1:25 000. I would also advise looking at the 1:50 000 maps from Rando Editions because these have more of the paths and ascensions marked than the IGN version.

The IGN maps often only show waymarked routes, whereas the Rando Rditions which are based on IGN show other routes which exist.

Yes I have seen the IGN25 memory maps but I think they are quite expensive for what they are.

I will look into the 1:50000 maps as well Thanks.
