I'm thinking of starting an outdoors blog, I know the kind of thing I'd like to read and as such, write about but what are everyone else's opinions?

Are there any you particularly like/dislike, do too many concentrate on outdoors kit and not enough on the outdoors?

Or do you think they're self-indulgent twaddle by wannabe journos?

Cheers guys,

It seems pretty easy to me... you just have to do awesome things, and take awesome photos and talk about it in an interesting way. Or at least, that's what I like (for examples, see i-cjw, hiking taiwan, petesy, sea kayak photo). Talking about the toys you used is a bonus, but if you're not comparing things reviews in isolation aren't necessarily very useful

It would be unfair to generalise. As always, Sturgeon's law is quite appropriate. To paraphrase: 99% of outdoorsy blogs are crap, but that's not surprising because 99% of *everything* is crap.

I think that you should probably not write self-indulgent twaddle like some kind of wannabe journo. If you can manage that, you'll be well ahead of the crowd

Where you went, how you got there, what happened.

Please don't Test gear and go on factory visits.

Some good, some bad. Some are basically just free advertising for certain gear companies. Some are obviously just used as a self promotion tool, either to try and get free gear, or create a career for themselves in the 'outdoor industry'. The good ones have an obvious love of the outdoors, with no other motive than that.

I find folk linking to blogs particularly annoying, especially on threads that have no obvious link.

I think you should write a blog for yourself and if others find it and read it and enjoy it, then that's a bonus. I've only got a handful of followers but I like keeping a record of what i get up to.

You should concentrate on whatever floats your boat. I don't do many gear reviews personally, but quite enjoy reading others.

Honestly?

Blogs are, by their nature, self-indulgent......Blurry pics of you and your mates up Crib Goch in the mist don't really do it for me. I doubt they do much for anyone.

But if you can write something interesting, or just write (or take decent photos), then you might gain a following. If that's what you want. But then, what do you want? You need to think about what the blog is for.

For me, there's plenty of "I went here and did this" blogs (too many) and fewer "and this is why and this is how it felt" blogs.

Have a look at Kelly Cordes blog for examples of the latter:

I use blogs and my web site, to record my trip reports from home and abroad and also to link my photographs to. I don't request feedback but occasionally a comment is posted, mainly positive, as folks who aren't interested wont read them. Folks have used them for route planning but I think the photographs are the main interest.

My web site is relatively easily to find on a Google search but not my blogs.

Write a blog for yourself. Document your trips and learning as a journal. Share your passion and I am sure it will be read. Those that don't like blogs don't have to read it. Why worry what others think of it? Someone will always dislike it.

It's your blog and a personal thing. It's a record and a way of connecting with others in a different way. I would not know about single skin shelters, routes in Norway and the majestic sights of Alaska as much as do now if not for blogs. Good blogs have trip reports and buy their own kit as well sometimes telling it honestly if they got it wrong. Bad blogs are down to opinion. I am yet to find a guide to what is a good, or bad blog that everyone agrees with.
