Hi,

I need a mountain 2250 metres high min, prominace is not an issue. Don't need to go any higher. I suspect the alps, plenty of choice. but I need help or local knowledge on access, below a few things that I need to keep in mind

* Walkable, crampons and axe are ok but no ropework

*cheap transport links, bus routes , So near Ryanair or Easyjet routes is a must

*from leaving front door and returning 4 to 5 days max (giving 2 nights on mountain) Walking distance not a big issue

*Guide not neccasary (keep costs down)

*Have schoolboy french which is better than zero german and Italian

*Decent maps available (will be solo)

*Go date is Spring next year (2012)

any suggestions, experiences would be appreciated

If you read "alpine area" forums maybe a link to here inorder to widen the net

You could go to 3718m... possibility of no snow and ice in Spring... lots of flights... cheap daily buses to 2350m (higher than your originally specified mountain!)... no guide required (but permit needed, available online, for the last 150m of the climb)... local language not essential, as English is widely understood... decent maps available at 1:25,000 scale if required.

It's called El Teide and it's on Tenerife.

WOW sorted.

thanks very much Paddy and Rocky

Reason is for level 8 of the hillwalking Adventure Skills Badges for scouts in Ireland.

just getting ready for Ben Nevis to finish of level 7.

The final 9th level is to 3250 m

so El Teide may sort it all out

Glad to be of service. To get a permit to go all the way to the top of El Teide, check this website, and click on 'Teide'.

For all the various options for getting up and down El Teide, my guidebook will be available in the next few weeks, and as soon as I get my grubby mitts on a copy I'll let it go as a 'free draw' prize on here!

You could consider mountains in ski resorts, if there is some installation leading to the top of it, you will be able to walk it without any contraptions on your feet and without any guides, if there are no signposts for trails, you'll have the signposts for the ski runs.

Lots to choose from in France with Geneva as your airport.

Obviously, if it's unspoilt tops you're after, you won't like it but it has its benefits (you'll never go hungry or thirsty with farms doubling up as cafe galore...)

Edit: whoops, noticed the Spring bit, forget about it but in summer...

I thought it was related to this:

The Netherlands wants a mountain

and

more details

Apparently they're thinking of twice the height of Snowdon, so your number was about right

I grew up in the Netherlands and think the idea, if true, is totally bonkers!
