Forgive me, I know this must be one of the most common questions on here, so if there's already a relevant thread somewhere else, please don't hesitate to point me in the right direction, but I'm looking for a good camp sites in Wales and my preferences are quite specific.

I've just returned from 4 days at the Abbey Farm Campsite in Llangollen which was very nice, but also very noisy. There must have been at least 100 kids, screaming and shouting from about 8:30am to 9:30pm, which I can't pretend didn't mar my enjoyment somewhat.

It may be relevant to point out that I am very much a campsite convert. Up until the last couple of years I've been adamant that wild camping is the only way I could possibly fulfill my desire to be at one with nature, but at the ripe old age of 42 (and not being the fittest man in the world) I simply have to accept that I am not what wild campers are made of... see that as me being a quitter, if you so desire - you're probably right anyway.

This is relevant, however, because it dictates what I am looking for in a campsite, namely the convenience and (relative) security of a campsite, but combined with the solitude and peace of a wild camp. I once saw (in a magazine, I think) a campsite somewhere in the UK that seemed to meet this criteria perfectly, but for the life of me I can't remember its name. It was set in woodland and guests would be given a predetermined 'pitch' - laid out so that no one was within site of anyone else. Open fires were also permitted.

I'm not looking for a campsite set in woodland necessarily, but one that prides itself on giving each guest a degree of privacy along with peace and quiet.

I may well be expecting too much from a campsite, but if anyone knows of anywhere like this I'd be most interested to hear details. Thanks in advance.

I do have a few suggestions...

  1. Don't go camping in public sites during school holidays
  2. Don't go  camping in public sites on bank holidays
  3. Especially don't combine the two
  4. Weekends are probably a bad idea
  5. You might want to avoid days with nice weather, too.

Just following 1 and 2 will have a remarkable difference. Failing that, there's a few places listed here which might fit the bill.

there are several websites that list campsites that allow a fire in Wales (+UK in general). Also the more remote the campsite, generally, the less kids there will be

I'll try and dig up the link and post it here later

I recommended  one to another poster.  He went and was happy....

This place is great - very basic - just a cold tap and one loo, but has firepits plus wood for sale and a stream right on site.  Can walk straight up onto the ridges running north from the Fan-y-Big and Crybyn , but dunno about dogs - it's a sheep farm - best contact them first.

Thanks as always for the reponses. A quick scan of those replies has already got me tingling with excitement - the prospect that such places do exist.

I'll follow all the links provided and get back in due course with my thoughts.

Hi, Jake, thanks for the welcome back, and yes, it has been a while

How about camping in Cwm Eigiau. It's not a camp site, but the walk from the car park at the end of the road to the reservoir is short. However, you may have to contend with DoE parties.
