I'm visiting the North Penines later this month and have a couple of questions about current access to Warcop Range.

I know the MoD had promised improved access to the Murton Fell area, which is outside the Danger Area and so Access Land anyway, but all I've found on the web is this  2007 MoD map showing the routes new paths and bridleways in the area. The route of the bridleway along the current track out of Murton and extended to High Cup Nick was then shown as subject to review. Does anyone know the current status of these routes?

Also I've been told that the MoD have built a footbridge over Connypot Beck on the supposedly permit only county boundary fence route to Mickle Fell. Is this true? it would be surprising given their obstructive policies on access to the Danger Area and last time I walked the route, it had to be waded at thigh depth.

Oops I've found a picture of a new shiny bridge over Connypot Beck, a few metres from the boundary fence. Apparently there's a cross at your own risk sign, which I would have thought would be more useful when you had to wade across the stream in spate.

I think the 2007 map still shows the current situation. The route you refer to runs through 'Area Victor', which is used by the military, but isn't shelled, and you can walk there whenever you like. The other rights of way, that run through the 'Danger Area', can be used whenever firing isn't taking place. If you contact the camp, they'll tell you when it's safe to use them. Once, when I was up there, I met someone from the County Council surveying all the rights of way, and he told me that he had to abide by the same 'rules' as everyone else regarding access. If you want to step off the rights of way and head across country (climbing Mickle Fell, for example) then you need to negotiate a permit. The new footbridge across Connypot Beck carries a notice saying that you use it at your own risk. I don't think anyone would have a problem with that... especially when the alternative is wading it thigh deep when it's in flood! The bottom line is... despite restrictions on access... it's a lot easier to get information about access on the Warcop Range than it was in the past.

Too right accessing the information is easier Paddy. In the old days there was a snail mail address and an anwering machine, neither of which I got a reply from.  I thought I'd try this wonderful new invention called email to get a permit, just to see what happened  and had one in my inbox within two hours. I'd have just gone anyway if I didn't get a reply as I did before.

There have been some slight improvements to the times of access to the Danger Area too - Sunday afternoons, 12 weekends and a set number of short notice days although a permit is still still in theory required to stray from RoWs.

I know the MoD promised the paths in Area Victor and the better access times at the inquiry for renewal of the permission for the Danger Area a few years back. I don't remember anything about building bridges for walkers though.
