I just fancy getting away with the wife over Xmas. I'd like to be looked after as far as food goes and I'd like somewhere with good views and easy walks. Normally I'd be happy to go hostelling. I've done it in the past but I think this time I'd like something a little more luxurious and definitely on the quiet side. No families around and a real fire would be wonderful.

Thanks.

As for location south of the Scottish border and preferably no more than about a 5 hour drive from London so the Lakes is a bit of a push. Mind you if the place is nice we might tavel a little further, to say Yorkshire.

Ideally we'd travel on either the 22nd or the 23rd of December returning on say the 28th or 29th. I'd go for a full week if that was the 'package' deal.

The easy walks are for my wife who's arthritic knees mean hill climbing is out of the question. Also I'd like some fresh air to clear my lungs and my head and to ease my conscience about eating Xmas dinner .

Nice try Mick but unless their website's not working properly they're fully booked already over Xmas. I double checked with availability in November and that's no problem. Xmas - there's nothing available.

Thats a shame, we've had a few days there and it's ideal.

Why not Scotland? Flights from London City to Edinburgh on the dates are £115.13 return. Then train to somewhere.

That's a possibility. There's some lovely places on this website that I'm starting to check out.... www.uniquehomestays.com.

Scotland? Mmmm. I'll think about that. Problem was with airports last year if you remember. Might consider the Channel Isles.

HF holidays have a number of places in the UK offering Christmas breaks.

Not used them myself but know folk who did and rated them highly - I'm going back a few years mind.

The couple I knew liked the led walks of different grades.  They could choose walks to suit themselves and didn't have to walk alone. They were Ramblers and liked the 'organised' set up. Walking in a group is not everyone's cup of tea I know but a holiday with like minded folk worked for them. You mentioned your wife's knee problem and I wondered if the graded walks might appeal - giving you an option to do something more challenging while she sticks to lower level but can still have company if she wants it.

You say 'no families' and on the 'quiet side'.  I think HF tend to attract couples and single folk mostly.

Not sure about the open fires but they tend to be based in country houses so quite likely to be part of the package.
