Has anybody on here done the Landmannalaugar trail in Iceland?

We are looking to go Iceland next year in June/July for two weeks for our honeymoon. Really fancied doing the walk (after researching things to do in Iceland then coming across the Julia Bradbury BBC programme) in the first week, then hiring a car for the second to see more of the Island.

Would be looking to do the walk without a guide as it seems well signed and marked on the ground and using the mountain huts.

I have found some information but it most seems to be based around going through a company/guide, there does seem to be a daily bus service from Reykjavik to the start but not sure about the finish?

Would like some advice from anybody who has done it, any info or links to any info, experiences etc would be hugely appreciated.

Hopefully thinking we will be able to leave our not walking gear for the second week either at a hotel (we will be staying in Reykjavik before catching the bus to the start) or at Left Luggage etc.

Thanks in advance for any comments

May I recommend this place to rent a car. Cheap and cheerful http://www.fithostel.is/

It's a good walk, but make sure you get booked into the fimmvorduhals hut although you can camp in the wind and rain next to it!

Of course, everyone wants to stay at Fimmvörðuháls, but space is limited. However, the Baldvinsskáli hut, just a bit further downhill, is being replaced any time now. It had fallen into a bad state of repair and was damp, smelly and used as a toilet and rubbish dump. Its replacement has already been built and the idea is to load it onto a truck and take it up the mountain road and just drop it into the same place as the old one. Not sure whether the old one is going to be lifted onto the same truck and towed away, or just broken up for firewood!

The Baldvinsskáli hut was getting quite run down, and became very dusty after the 2010 eruption. Also, for maps, the best are the 1:50000 American military maps which are out of print since they went and are only available from a stationary shop in Reykjavik which I can't remember the name or the street! Not surpisingly the sheet that you would need is long gone anyway. Landmaelingar Islands produce the new maps which have poor national coverage (at 50k) and in my opinion aren't a patch on the American maps. Anyway, the path is obvious, even at the top in the fog and horizontal rain which you will likely encounter.
