Hi All, I'm relatively new to walking in the Lakes, I've done a lot in Scotland but I'm keen to do more in the lakes. What are peoples top 3 favourite day walks in the lakes? I've only done 5 so its not too difficult for me to say! 1: Helvellyn via Striding edge 2: Fairfield Horseshoe 3: Haystacks I'm fresh out of ideas now of what to try next and it would be great to get some reccomendations.

Folk seem to rate the tourist route up Scafell Pike from Wasdale.

Kentmere horseshoe, Grisedale Pike and Grasmoor, Seathwaite fell Great end and Glaramara, Wetherlam and Coniston old man, Red Pike Haystacks Great Gable Kirk Fell,
There are loads. If you know how far you can walk, and how much ascent you can do there are dozens of 10-15 mile classics with hundreds of variations on them.

Compared to most scottish hills Lakeland fells are much more 'compact' Great Gable from almost any direction is worth a trip. Cat Bells 'Horseshoe' do cat Bells then continue to Dale end and return via Robinson or Hindscarth, or if you are up for it Knott Rigg. A different Helvellyn horseshoe is to go up to Grisedale tarn and do Dollywagon and Nethermost Pikes then back via Striding or Swirral edge. St Sunday Crags gives a nice exposed walk with great views as well (you can look at the queue on Striding edge) High Street from Haweswater is mostly quiet with a variety of routes up. Steve D

Fresh out of ideas after 5 walks.... Perhaps a map and some imagination would help

Simo, thanks that's exactly what I'm looking for 10-15 mile classics (maybe nearer 10miles!) I've turned on my messaging. Restless, the problem is there are so many routes on the map and literally hundreds of fells in a relatively small area. I would like to experience some of the classic walks even if I don't try and work them out myself Steve, yes I love the compactness of Lakeland, almost anything is accessible, unlike Scotland where no matter where you stay the hills are usually some way off! Thanks for the ideas, St Sundays Crags sounds right up my street.

Top three is a bit limiting but I'll give you top 3 from Wasdale. 1. Mosedale horseshoe including High Level Route. 2. Great Gable, up to Sty Head, traverse to Windy Gap visiting Napes Needle & Sphinx, then up to top and back down any way you like. 3. Scafell Pike, up to Sty Head, then Esk Hause, then to the top, down by Broad Crag Col and the Corridor. You could do the last 2 from Borrowdale side also

Don't forget the hills around Coniston and S of the Wynrose pass. Also the Kentmere Horse shoe is worth a look. Ennerdale reservoir is another oft' overlooked place to start from . I think the best walk I have done so far is around about Tarn Crag from Grasmere, in the snow. Any thing with free parking really

hey if you guys want a challenge, if I arrived/depart Windermere train station and have 5 nights, make me a route? 15mile/day limit, fairly fit. Last time I did Windermere-Limefitt-Glenridding-Braithwaite-Langdale-Windermere. The hardest slog was Braithwaite-Langdale. I'd like to get over to Scafell and camp Wasdale. I'm tempted to altitude wildcamp to not waste time in the descent/ascent, but I've never done that before.

High Street via Harter fell (or Nan Bield Pass or Rough Crag) then back over Kidsty Pike is good. Much quieter as Steve says. Langdales via Stickle Tarn and Sergeant Man..... There's just so many. I'd say just pick something and go for it or, the main magazines tend to have routes in them every month if you want something to follow on paper.

Off the top of my head: Try the Coledale Horseshoe - my favourite Lakes walk. Newlands Horseshoe (I think someone already mentioned this via Catbells) Crinkle Crags and Bowfell from Langdale (if you feel energetic you can keep adding fells to this - last time I added Esk Pike and Scafell Pike (via Broad Crag)) Langdale Pikes The Coniston fells are good (park at Walna Scar) Scafell from Eskdale. Skiddaw via Longside Edge The High Stile ridge Great Gable from any number of directions (I prefer from Seathwaite) High Street via Long Stile I could go on.

My favourite Lake District route was all the Wainwright fells as a continuous walk over 28 days!

 Anything around Haweswater area....peaceful-er

For me it would have to be either Coniston Old Man, or somewhere in the Langdales.

Latrigg via the path for people with mobility problems . nice and quick and a great view.

I usually look for walks with variety and my favourite Lakes walk is probably Coniston to Torver Common along the lake side, through Torver to Goat Water, Dow Crag by the South Rake, Coniston Old Man and back to Coniston via the old workings. This walk has just about everything in moderation without being extreme at any point.
