The reviews I have seen for this are early "light weight" reviews, does anyone have any hands on knowledge of using one. On paper it looks useful for my many outdoor activities but the price is too high to take a punt on one, thnx Paul

I've been seriously looking at one of these GPS's to replace my ageing Colorado.

I only got to physically see one in a shop a couple of weeks ago so I think it going to be too early to get any meaningful hands-on in-depth review at the moment.

I'm sure you've seen the small general reviews have all been pretty positive. The only general downside being mentioned (unsurprisingly) is the price. I'd also add that I thought it looked a bit of a beast size-wise.

I'm looking to get one in the US while on my trip starting in October. Can't say that it'll be used in a typical UK outdoorsy way while I'm there but I should pretty much have the measure of it by the time I leave in December.

My limited knowledge of it at the moment does STRONGLY suggest that its a multifunction device*. If all you want is a GPS for walking etc then maybe the Montana isn't the way to go.

*Yup I know that that sounds obvious but looking at the actual unit it becomes even more obvious IFSWIM.

Cheers B, I have an edge 800 for riding, its great for data gathering, but the screen is too small for decent navigation.

I would use the Montana for walking and in my kayak and I only use my kayak a handfull of times each year so I think I might just pass and wait to see what else comes to the market

Oh lordy!

I definitely wouldn't recommend* a Montana then as I said its a beast of a thing. I'm sure that there are a number of people here that will be able to offer advice on some of the newer Garmin more suited to walking. I have as I said an ageing Colorado which has been fantastic but is old hat now.

The reason I'm considering the Montana ( and its by no means certain that I'll actually get/keep one!) is that living in London I tend to hire cars and its nice to have a satnav. Buying 1 for the car and one for outdoors use seems silly to me not to mention expensive. Also it'll be useful when driving in the US (and Canada) where you get (I kid you not) 20 lane highways with multiple lane exits... I still have nightmares thinking about the I5 into San Diego.

* I'm obviously saying that without having got one used one!
