Saw a nice fleece earlier this afternoon in a sale. Went in and tried on an XL. Not unusually for me the sleeves where too long BUT the hem just managed to scrape the top of my trousers.

Just been to the manufacturers sizing page on the internet and noticed that they list every size apart from the neck to hem measurement. SURELY this is a relevant piece of information? I can buy trousers in Long but not tops!

Do manufacturers work to standard industry ratios when deciding on sizes?

Some what peeved at loosing a decent fleece at a good price

Most manufacturers seem to think short = technical/fashionable with both fleeces and waterproofs; God knows why. Try Paramo fleeces -- fashion is not a consideration.

Many brands seem to work along the idea that all people are one height, and smaller or larger sizing just means that they are thinner or fatter. Arm lengths, body lengths and trouser lengths stay the same between sizes.

That's one of the reasons Scandinavian/N. European brands fit me better - the average height they assume is closer to mine than for example Rohan and Craghoppers (cold belly button anyone?

the fleece length is probably so it will fit under their equally short jacket. i agree it's somewhat annoying.

I've noticed that jackets especially have got shorter over the years.  Arm lengths are not so much of an issue to me as body lengths.

From what I remember (and from going through lots of old photos) all my old gear used to prety much cover most of my backside and crotch - both vital areas for keeping warm and comfortable IMHO.

A few jackets I have tried recently barely cover my belt line, let alone my backside.  At the same time I have noticed phrases like "active fit" and "technical cut" becoming more and more popular in the manufacturer's blurb.  The thing is though, I do not recall my old, longer jackets ever restricting movement...

The synic in me says that manufacturers are simply saving on their material costs to fatten up their profit margins - make the jacket shorter, use less fabric, pump in a load of jargon and catch phrases into their sales pitches and watch the cash flow in.

Rohan (as mentioned above), PHD, WestWinds, HillTrek and Paramo are the manufacturers I favour because their sizes don't tend to do this.  Their jackets, even in the 'off the peg' sizes are prety much just right on me, even if I take a 'small' from one source and a 'large' from another.  If not, they do altering services...

The oddity to me though is the differences between what they all call 'medium'.  For Rohan polo shirts I take a 'small' but need a 'medium' in their t-shirts, fleeces and jackets.  My WestWinds parka was also a 'small' but measured up almost exactly the same as my HillTrek 'large' jacket.  And with PHD gear I use their 'large' sizes almost exclusively!

Paramo is a bit unique, as many of us know, and each separate model seems to have its own unique size.

Oh, for some standard sizes!

James

Well standard sizes would be no good, because we're all different sizes with different arm lengths, body lengths etc etc

Yes it'd help immensly if they stated arm & body length as well as chest size. That and stopped pretending that all their stuff fits the same, because almost no one is terribly consistent.

Mind you, given how many different factories and the huge variety of stuff they're all producing I guess its hardly a surprising state of affairs. When you've got 200+ styles to measure up and publish detailed info on then..... And they don't really have enough control to make sure the sizes are internally consistent.

Really, nice, simple minimalist MTM stuff does have quite a lot to reccomend it in principle. It doesn't even really seem to end up more expensive. Very much not the extant model though!

The Rohan standard man is a bit longer in the torso than me, the Rohan standard woman is quite a lot shorter.

I'm 2" shorter than Roos but longer in the trunk, and I like Rohan as it's generously long (and in a M too, I have to go to L in most).  But as Roos points out, they have very different ideas about the shape of the ladies.

I have a Subzero Factor 1 top that's especially long, which is good.  And a Factor 2 which is a bit on the short side.  So much for consistency!

Pete.
