Hi Guys,

We're off pretty soon for our second tour of the Brecon Beacons and I was wondering if anyone can help with my route please.

We're going to do Crib Goch on Friday so will be there early and down asap, into the car and down the 470 to the beacons. We would ideally like to camp at lake Llyn Cwm Llwch Friday night. Last time we parked up in a layby with facilities just off the A470 and went straight up to corn du, pen y fan etc but we dont really want to have to do this to get to the lake. Does anyone know if there is a route to get to the lake without having to go all the way up and back down corn du again please?

Yes, park at SO006244 and walk up Cwm Llwch to the llyn. There is actually an informal camping ground at the parking area if you can't be bothered to go wild!

It's all privately owned but the farmer seems pretty laid back.

you should be able to park at the carpark at Cwmgwdi (just south of Brecon at SO 024248) and walk up Cwm Llwch to the Llyn from there.

If you park where Kate says then you're in the cwm leading to the lake: it's a straightforward walk along a well-know path. If you park at Cwmgwdi (the car park is a bit further to the south than the spot on your map), then you'd have to walk along a couple of country lanes to get to Cwm Llwch, and pass the parking spot Kate mentions.....

Thanks,

Ive found the parking spot kate mentioned and will be parking there. I found it using google maps, im assuming i have the right place but there is a gate in the way. Am i ok to just open up and go park there? Would i need to speak to the farmer first or is he ok with people parking there?

Yes, that's correct, Joe, open gate, drive through, shut gate firmly, park car on grassy area between track and river (ie: on your left after the gate). Yes, you are ok to open up and park there, no you do not need to speak with the farmer, it's a very long and well established parking area, indeed on the OS map it's marked with a P

If you're there at a weekend and the weather isn't too bad, there will be other cars there too.

Have a great camp!

edited to add: if you use where's the path you can see split screen OS 1:50k mapping and satellite photos, great for route planning. Only problem is, the site's becoming so popular that it's hitting its OS map tile download limit earlier every day! Catch it in the morning and you'll get the most recent mapping no problem.
