Paddy,

Is the M O D reply the "chiken wing" ?

Or some of the other ones?

Dunno what the technical term was... but it involved violently ripping the dog's front legs apart... which is only an option when the dog is very big, has its legs raised on your shoulders, face to face with you... and is 0.5 seconds from tearing your throat out. At that stage, there isn't much point trying to engage the dog in any kind of reasoned argument about human rights versus animal rights!

One of my walking friends has a a dog dazer. She points it at the dog, it presumably makes some noise we cannot hear but fido can. All dogs turn away - so far. I just hope she checks the battery occasionally!

We jog & walk and use an ultrasonic device from Maplins...20,000 mhz frequency (inaudible to humanes)

we were in bulgaria and I was up this street looking for the beer at 40p per pint like you do, when I was confronted with a pack of dogs. (some have rabies) got my said device out, which worked a treat...they all scarpered off towards my girlfriend waiting for me below ....she has a dog phobia from when she was attacked as a child

a lot cheaper than the dog dazzer, I think £15, and smaller also.

walking poles held out create a barrier that seems to work (4 poles if a couple have a pair each)

Paddy,

Yep, that's a version of the "chicken wing". Another is if possible, as dog jumps 'duck underneath', grab back legs and do the same.

IIRC, there is at least another 5 or so ways to deal with attacking dogs, by MOD, before they would want things to get 'noisey'. NB that means shooting.

Surely now, in all this health and safety culture, can anyone give me a damn good reason why on earh ALL dogs should not be muzzled in a public place?

It seems 'nice doggie owners' become aggressive themselves when you try to defend yourself against their good doggie.

I refuse to be a 'bit of sport' any longer.

It is time to start a petition and get all dogs muzzled. Then there is no problem at all.

Then parks will be 'public' parks again and not dog parks.

Wh should my family dog be muzzled? Because she 'might' Do something you dislike?

My dog sits when horses pass by on the local bridle way. My dog has been attacked by 'rats on leads' more than once and not retaliated. She has had 2/3 year old wave ice cream in her face without licking it -more fortitude than I.

Oh she is a rottie too.

If you want wellbehave dogs in a public place I am 100% n agreement. But to be it seems like u are a fec£ing idiot as Mrs brown would say.

Aww. Don't stop. I bet that's a large part of your appeal.

There are very large dog breeds throughout Europe and beyond in the mountain areas where the transhumance took/takes place. That is transferring the flocks of sheep to the mountain pastures for the summer. These are the giant pastoral breeds that are/were used to guard these flocks against predators such as bears and wolves.
e.g Portugal - Estrela. Spain - Spanish Mastiff & Pyrenean Mastiff. France - Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Italy - Maremma. Balkans - Sarplaninec. Hungary - Kuvasz & Komondor. Poland - Tatra Mountain Dog with similar dogs in the Carpathians. Turkey - Akbash & Kangal. Southern Russia and Caucasus - Owtcharka.
I think it is only in the wilder places of europe such as Kish Logan in the Carpathians that you are likely to encounter such working dogs these days although conservationists like these breeds because they lessen the likelihood of wolves and bears being exterminated. The Turkish Kangal dog is being run with flocks in Namibia and East Africa to guard them against cheetahs as a conservation measure and other large breeds are being used in the USA to guard flocks against coyotes

Having being charged and the charges eventually being dropped, (cruelty to animals) I would not recommend "killing" the dog.
