Backpacking through the Ben Alder area next wek and looking to get back to Dalwhinnie on Monday 03/10/2011 to get the train back on Tuesday 04/10/2011. Does anybody know of cheapish accomodation in the village for one night?

There's not much of anything in Dalwhinnie itself. It's less a village than a distillery and a closed hotel, unless things have changed recently. There's a bunkhouse a few miles up the road, right enough: click

Aye, if the timing worked out I think I'd be looking at hopping on a bus or train north to Kingussie or Newtonmore for the night, and add a station to the trip the next day. The Dalwhinnie hotel's pipes burst over the winter and, from what I heard, it simply wasn't viable repairing all the damage.

Citylink have a bus north roughly every two hours between 14:00 and 20:30 but the price is steep (£7.20). Trains at c.16:00 and 22:00, costing a fiver. The station has a 'proper' waiting room if the weather's dire.

Stay at the Hotel. Well, not so much in the hotel, but, there is some good camping right beside it. The hotel is, sadly, closed. Stayed there in May: the security checking folk were OK when they came round; just warned of rats (but didn't see any). The garage has a small supply of food and water etc.,

Thanks for the replies. looks like a trip up to Newtonmore or Kingussie

There are two bunkhouses in Kingussie, or used to be -- the Laird's Bothy, attached to a hotel, and another newer one on the other side of the main road. Both pretty decent when I've stayed in them. However, iff you like a few decent beers though Newtonmore might be a better bet, tho I found the rooms in the hostel there a bit on the small side. There used to be a really good real ale pub in Kingussie, but closed some years ago, alas.

There is a public toliet in Dalwhinnie: walk up the road from the train station, turn left to the community centre. The garage is good for drinks / some snacks. I camped at Dalwhinnie next to a small dam, on a lovely piece of flat grass. Just beyond the garage.

We have stopped at a cafe in Dalwhinnie a couple of times - was that the hotel?

I've stayed at the hotel - partly because one of the best ever books about trout fishing is based there - it's where the author always stayed, and is a very detailed account of the river - the Truim - that flows past the town. Fishing a Highland Stream - a love affair with a river

Came through there on Saturday having walked from behind Strathossian house and thinking I would get on the 6PM train north up to Aviemore and use the bunkhouse on Dalfaber road. I was absolutely soaked to the skin ( isnt goretex or Event absolute rubbish). Unfortunately the 6PM train doesnt stop at Dalwhinnie. It,s official there,s nowt for a traveller in Dalwhinnie, no B+B,hotel is closed, garage shuts at 6PM. With options limited thanks to the local who hails from my neck of the woods who pointed me in the direction of the 20.16 service bus which stops on the A9. Even that was a struggle however as by that time it was pitch black and I had to hail the bus by using a headtorch. The bus which was 20 minutes late, stopped about 100 yds past the bus stop.
