ID: I'm sure Jon would welcome articles on cottage industry stuff. So if you'd like to write some...

"So, by placing an ad on OM a company would expect a passionate review aswell as the advertising. What if the review was critical?" how about passionately critical? why not a thread (or is there one already...something tickles the memory) listing the smaller/esoteric producers of stuff with alerts on it for anything new they're doing a la bargain thread

erm.....seems I might have just put myself in that position doesnt it? ...you need to get a blog, maybe you could call it IPD* ?

Hmm If Jon doesn't want to write about cottage products for commercial reasons that's just fine. But why are users not able to write user reviews on products that are not in the list? I've a couple of times requested to add a certain product to the list so I could write a balanced user review for this product. Never even had an answer to my requests. Are the commercial restrictions so bad that user reviews on 'non-approved' products are restricted?

well, I have floated the idea across Jon's bows but I have to write a fuller proposal for him to go away and consider properly. I'll let you know if anything transpires.......

Good luck. I hope it comes off.

...having just given myself some, and potentially lots of, work to do

It will be worth it when all the free kit and trips come rolling in

Ooooo lovely, thanks for the offer Mrs N I will look forward to the free tent inner but seriously, am interested mainly in giving a balanced view and a bit of exposure for cottage industries. Lets see if Jon thinks its a good idea and go from there

Getting back to the subject of a thread on cottage (and smaller) producers, its a great idea. Although I've been hiking on and off for years, it was only after going on OM for a while that I found out about PHD, and it was a mention on another forum which led me to Alpkit. There are lots of brands/kit that even the casual OMer would be interested in, and thanks to the web, can buy directly. We're not just interested in the big brands (important though they are), but in the small producers doing innovative stuff. The Hiking in Finland link showed just how many small companies are out there (only some of which I'd heard of), and how many were started up because people had made something for themselves, and then thought of selling to others. A collection of weblinks, reviews of kit and news would be great for everyone (perhaps something like this). If someone's feeling really ambitious, perhaps an 'alternative' trade show? Small or smallish producers and retailers only - it would be interesting to how many people would go. In fact I'd never heard of Oookworks until it was mentioned in this thread, but can I make a suggestion to the Oookworks guys? Please make sure that your tags include 'Ookworks'. If you google 'Ook' instead of 'Oook', you end up with google suggesting 'cookwear'. I ended up finding their site via a mention on Backpackinglight.com. If we can find you, then we can buy from you...

good point Mike, links are everything it seems these days and a mention on a forum even better

Done. Now buy something Cheers for the heads up, Mike. I actually had nothing in there. No keywords or anything. Pots and pans. How embarrassing.
