The Tom Tom is beginning its journey to its final destination. Whilst I love Shaun (default Irish male voice) telling me where to go, I'd really like to have the facility to enter my destination in OS grid refs. I know Garmin Nuvis used to do this. Anyone know if they still do, or of any other Sat Navs that do? I'd rather have a specific car Sat Nav than try to mess around with my Android phone, unless there's a brilliant app that turns the phone into something as easy to use as the Tom Tom. cheers.

If you find one Kate, let me know as that would be a very handy sat nav to have!

Does the Sat Nav app for the Memory Map Adventurer have this feature?

Just checked, and the version of copilot I have on my phone accepts grid reference. http://www.copilotlive.com/uk/ I run it on an adroid phoe, havent bothered with stand alone sat nav for years. I find copilot works just as well, if not better than the TT I used in the past. Unfortunately google only give you 15mins to test an app. I have also sunscribed to the active traffic addon, was supprised how good it is.

Yes, I'm runinng Copilot Live on my smartphone, had it about 18 months now. It does take OS grid refs, as well as numerous other ways of inputting destinations. I like it at least as much as the Tom Tom I had on a previous gizmo, and it was about half the price (so I went for full European coverage, but haven't bothered with traffic add-ons or anything). Mine is version 8 for a Windows mobile v6 smartphone, and it does crash occasionally, but I think that's more than likely to be down to WM rather than Copilot. They seem to have been putting all their development effort into Android and iphone versions for the last year or more so I'd expect a newer Android version to be stable.

Kate my Android phone came with a built in sat nav that you just talk your destination in if you want and away you go and it also does google earth vision if needed then street view when you get very close,it not got a name just a large Blue arrow app. So so simple i rarely use my Nuvi now.... Grid refs,no!!!

my nuvi just seems to do lat/long, but not UK grid references.

Advised by Halfords bloke to talk to Garmin. Talked to Garmin girl and they no longer make car Sat Navs that you can use OS grid refs as coordinates. As Major Catastrophe says, they do take lat / long, and there are various programs out there that do a quick conversion, like nearby. Obviously you have to be in mobile phone contact...

 > Talked to Garmin girl and they no longer make car Sat Navs that you can use OS grid refs as coordinates Strange that a company would choose to remove functionality from a product...

 Indeed.

Obviously you have to be in mobile phone contact... That's a bit daft. Surely someone must have made some offline coordinate system conversion apps? There's no reason for it to be online only, after all. If I had any more free time, I'd see about cobbling something together (if only for Android phones). Maybe in a couple of months, if nothing else pops up

You're right, Serriadh, I have found an Android app, haven't had time to evaluate it yet. Will report back when I do.

Magellan eXplorist 710 will do full turn by turn directions. All of western Europe covered will do Grid ref or postcode. If you input a grid reference not on a road ie top of a mountain it will navigate you to the nearest road to the mountain top. I wonder if the guy who drove up Snowdon was testing one?

Just to report... I did buy a Garmin Nuvi, there are some things about it that I don't like as much as the old TomTom, but other things are better, and it was quite a bit cheaper than a TomTom with the same level of facilities. But more importantly - the useful Android app to translate OS Grid refs to lat / long is called UK Coordinate Tool, and it's free

Following this thread, I bought copilot as I thought the os grid reference function would be useful. However, this does not seem to work. For example, if I enter the reference for Hard Knott pass it returns a location near Cockermouth. This must be an error in the conversion from Lat/Long as when I enter this it gets it spot on. It is not too much of an issue as Memory Map, which I use on my phone, will allow you to show Lat/Long, but irritating none the less. Matt C - does it work for you?

Zippy, I've just checked and it works fine for me. One thing I noticed - the screen where you input the OS GR is laid out to ask for the 2 letter gris square, and then it has a box for northings on the left and eastings on the right, which is back to front compared with the way the GR is written. Is there any chance that you've transposed the eastings and northings when you entered them? I just checked in Quo and the co-ords for Hardknott transposed do look like they take you out towards NW Cumbria, not all that far from Cockermouth. If it's not that then I wouldn't know, but my version of Copilot v8 is a (now obsolete, inevitably) one for a Windows Mobile 6 phone, not the current Android or iPhone versions, so it might be a bug in newer releases and worth contacting their online support.

You're quite right - I hadn't noticed they reversed the order. Works fine now.
