Walking on Tenerife - one of my next guidebooks - is close to being published.

That means it's time for yet another FREE DRAW for a copy!

So what's Tenerife like? Well... lots of resorts full of boozy Brits... granted... but also lots of amazingly rugged mountains, culminating in the mighty El Teide. This is the highest mountain on Spanish territory at a lofty 3718m (12,198ft), and I've given it a whole chapter in the book, with three different routes for the ascent, as well as a 'Three Peaks of Tenerife' challenge walk, if you're up for it. There are plenty of waymarked routes round the foot of the mountain, all within the national park, and often above the clouds. Below the national park is a belt of forestry, protected as the 'Corona Forestal', featuring a number of good trails. Long-distance walkers will be keen to discover the next stage of the island-hopping GR131, which I've already described across the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. There are areas of 'laurisilva' forest on the eastern and western ends of Tenerife, and some routes go all the way down to sea level. Anyway... there should be enough in the book to enable you to convert a bog-standard package holiday into a memorable adventure.

Check out the Cicerone website and click on all the links to learn more about the book. It currently shows as not available, but an advance copy is available for the draw. There is more information about the book on my website. Both sites contain a list of 50 routes around Tenerife, including the long-distance, island-hopping GR131.

Here's the deal... 'terms and conditions' if you like...

1. Entry is open to all OutdoorsMagic members, but ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.

2. Entry is available until 20th October, only through my website Enquiry Form.

3. You don't have to enter your 'real' name, your 'username' will do fine.

4. Give a valid email address, and I'll ask for your 'real' address only if you win.

5. Under the 'enquiry' field, just put 'Tenerife' so that all entries come together.

6. I hate spam, so I'm not going to spam you, and all emails will be deleted later.

7. The draw is entirely random, so everyone has the same chance to win.

8. The winner will be notified by email, and announced here on 21/10/11.

9. Yes, I'll sign the book, add an inscription if required, and post it to any UK address.

10. Overseas entries are welcome, but you'll have to contribute to the postage.

And that's enough 'terms and conditions', except for...

"I reserve the right to be wrong!"

This is intended as a 'fun' draw, so please don't take it too seriously. If it's 'fun' from my point of view, then I'll offer more books in due course as and when they're published.

Check out another FREE DRAW running parallel to this one... Walking in Sardinia.

GOOD LUCK!

Hello Paddy. When will the book be out? I'm thinking of heading to Tenerife early next year. Are there many opportunities to camp out on the routes? Thanks.

It's showing on the Cicerone website as being published on 24th October. On that page you can give them your email and they'll let you know as soon as it is available. The copy I have is an advance copy, which the printer sends to Cicerone, then they send to me. When the draw is over, I'll have to wait a while before I see another copy!

Camping in the national park in the middle of Tenerife, where all the highest mountains are, is completely forbidden. However, I've managed to tuck my tent behind a bush, and I've seen rock climbers hunkering down behind boulders for the night. Just bear in mind that everything is in excess of 2000m there, and the skies are usually crystal clear, which means it gets bitterly cold at night. There are small campsites administered by local authorities tucked away in lower forested areas, but it's a hassle to use them as you have to toddle along to local town halls miles away and go through an orgy of form-filling and passport-waving. Then you have to return to collect your permit, then show that at the campsite. It's not a system that works well if you just want to backpack from one site to another. Of course, this isn't a problem if you just opt for low-key wild camping.

One guidebook for all the FREEEEEEEEEEEEE advertising....a good deal

Some great walking on Tenerife...beware that altitude though if it is a quick long weekend foray.

Super routes available....water a big issue for some of the best looking high ridge routes; but perhaps compensated by (maybe) lighter bivvy gear.

As Paddy menions - relatively easy to hide - the Spanish don't tend to give a joder about these things..

Can be wet though; I'm biased - got soaked in a ditch whilst cycling East from Santiago del Teide...

+I've got pictures Kev; slides though....

I'm going back to tenerife again in January great place if you avoid the full fry and a pint of lager for 3.50 places, some great little restaurants just inland. And as well as hiking I may be able to do a bit of cross country skiing if there is enough snow and then go swimming in the sea in the evening. Perfect.

How come it's "Walking on Tenerife" but "Walking in Sardinia"? Just curious.....

Perhaps it's to do with the relative size of the islands?

I'd walk on the Isle of Man but in Ireland, I think.

Matt... Kate is cleverer than me and I think she's probably right!

However, I have 'Walking ON the Isle of Arran' and 'Walking IN the Isles of Scilly'.

I often think that the 'on' or 'in' thing boils down to whatever sounds right, whatever transpires between me and my publisher, and whatever ends up on the contract.

My full book list... in or on? Answers on (or in) a postcard please!

Brilliant. Thanks, Paddy. Looking forward to receiving the book.

Shame I didn't win your Sardinia draw too - I'll have to go and buy that one!
