Walking in Sardinia - one of my next guidebooks - is close to being published.

That means it's time for yet another FREE DRAW for a copy!

So what's Sardinia like? Well... until recently it had the reputation of being stunningly beautiful, abounding in interest, and desperately difficult to explore because so many paths and tracks would simply peter out in dense, thorny macchia, miles from anywhere. It's all changed in the past year or two, and there are now lots of well-signposted and waymarked trails, so you can stride out confidently knowing that there's a way through. If you read the recent feature in TGO magazine, then you might want further details to help explore Sardinia. The forestry agency, which marked all the trails, have also produced, completely free of charge, excellent 1:25,000 maps. The routes in the book stretch from the astounding limestone cliffs of Ogliastra, through the barren Supramonte, to the broad whaleback mountains of Gennargentu. This encompasses some of the highest, wildest and most popular walking routes in Sardinia.

Check out the Cicerone website and click on all the links to learn more about the book. It currently shows as not available, but an advance copy is available for the draw. There is more information about the book on my website. Both sites contain a list of 50 routes around Sardinia, and there is plenty of information explaining how to make the most of the newly-created waymarked trails.

Here's the deal... 'terms and conditions' if you like...

1. Entry is open to all OutdoorsMagic members, but ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.

2. Entry is available until 20th October only through my website Enquiry Form.

3. You don't have to enter your 'real' name, your 'username' will do fine.

4. Give a valid email address, and I'll ask for your 'real' address only if you win.

5. Under the 'enquiry' field, just put 'Sardinia' so that all entries come together.

6. I hate spam, so I'm not going to spam you, and all emails will be deleted later.

7. The draw is entirely random, so everyone has the same chance to win.

8. The winner will be notified by email, and announced here on 21/10/11.

9. Yes, I'll sign the book, add an inscription if required, and post it to any UK address.

10. Overseas entries are welcome, but you'll have to contribute to the postage.

And that's enough 'terms and conditions', except for...

"I reserve the right to be wrong!"

This is intended as a 'fun' draw, so please don't take it too seriously. If it's 'fun' from my point of view, then I'll offer more books in due course as and when they're published.

Check out another FREE DRAW running parallel to this one... Walking on Tenerife.

GOOD LUCK!

Today's the day... time to draw from the Tilley Hat...

And the lucky winner... looking for sunshine in Sardinia...

KEN G

Providing he tells me where to post the book... duly signed and inscribed if required.

More FREE DRAWS just as soon as I can rustle up more guidebooks!

Looking forward to it!   We've been talking about doing some walking/hiking in southern parts for a change so couldwell be Sardinia.  Now if only I could reprogram my brain so I don't automatically think of tins of fish when I hear that word.

I'm sure sardines are the last thing on the minds of Mr Berlusconi and his guests on Sardinia!

Oh, I dunno about that....

From Wikipedia:

"Sardines is the name of numerous children's games. All have in common an aspect where the players are required to lie side by side (as sardines in a can)."

Sounds like something Berlusconi and his 'guests' might well get up to...

Hmmm... point taken!

And for those of us who aren't corrupt world leaders, there's always The Lemon House, and i haven't found anyone, anywhere on the island who can offer visiting outdoors folk as much practical help and advice as Peter and Anne. (They get rave reviews on TripAdvisor too, so it's not just me who thinks they're good!)

We looked at The Lemon House after your article appeared in TGO. They sound excellent and Sardinia looks great (been to Corsica three times so curious what lies just south). Unfortunately the timing wasn't right for our trip this time, but once we've got the guide, I suspect it's only a matter of time...

I cycled from Cagliari to Santa Teresa Gallura about 12 years ago - on the way to Corsica.

Although not as mountainous as Corsica the scenery on the ride along the spine of the country was superb; very empty uplands, lovely people, and it was very cheap (then). On the way back I stuck to the East coast and that was a fine ride too.

Anyone know how suitable March would be in sardinia for getting out and walking / scrambling etc Is it perhaps too early in the season?

thanks

Brian

Well... it should be warm enough along the coast and on some of the smaller hills, but whether there will be rain or not is something you'll just have to check on the forecast. The limestone gets pretty slippery when wet. The highest mountains will be colder and might even have a bit of lingering snow. If there is a lot of rain, then some of the normally-dry rivers might prove impassable. Overall... I'd say it was worth taking a chance. I've been there a bit earlier than March and apart from being very cold in the highest mountains, the rest was perfectly acceptable.

The best person to talk to about the Selvaggio Blu is Peter Herold at The Lemon House, as he translated the Italian guidebook into English. You'll find he can advise about where to stash water along the route. I just incorporated some of the easier, non-rock-climbing stretches into other walks along the cliff coast.
