Hi, saw an ad for the KEELA NEPTUNE WATERPROOF WINDPROOF FLEECE JACKET. If anyone has any info re this company and the jacket in particular it would be great if they could find the time to pass it on.

Not used that but I have the keela belay jacket. Primaloft one filled jacket that can be found for £40! Mine was! Really good Scottish brand that makes no nonsense clothing at reet bargain prices. Never seen a bad review of anything they make. Sorry I couldn't be more useful about that fleece but I'd be willing to take a gamble on it.

Thanks Thomasaurus, your info fits with other bits I've heard apart from their stuff tends to be a bit heavier than other good brands.

"Waterproof" is often confued with "good"...

The problem is there's usually a downside (or several), and in a waterproof fleece it'll be breathability, weight, packing bulk and drying time.

Better IMHO to put a conventional fleece under a light waterproof and then you've got more layering flexibility if you're getting too hot but want to stay dry, or it's stopped raining and you want better breathability.  Or you want something that takes less than forever and a day to eventually dry.

Another thing to look out for is are the seams taped.  If not the fabric will be waterproof but the garment will still leak through the seams (after which it will take the aforementioned forever and a day to dry out).

Keela do make good solid stuff on the whole.  But my personal experience of windproof fleece made with a lamintaed layer which happens to be waterproof too is they're not asgood in practice as they sound on paper, and that's from anyone, not just Keela.

Pete.

Thanks Pete,

I must admit I'm wary of laminated seams - especially as they're dodgy in washing machines.  Seperate items could be the best option.

If you just want an insulating layer id reccomend the belay jacket. Fair enough they're stuff may be heavier than some but is saving say 20% weight worth 2, 3 times the price? Realistically who will actually notice a few grams when they're wearing it? The trend at the mo seems to be people getting all worked up to save a miniscule amount of weight. Just my 2p anyway

DUDE!! Buy the fleece! It's 100 percent waterproof it's one of the most breathable garments I've came across. Keeps me nice and snug. I use this for ice climbing, I needed a good garment to keep me extra snug and dry, but also stop condensation building up and sweat turning my nips in to icicles! Took the plunge and bought it, I'm even going to buy another one for spare. My mate after trying it out (something we do often) has decided to get one too. I hear what the guy's above are saying about layering but I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. And a belay jacket, go for one if you want, but if a belay jacket is too clumsy for what you have in mind then I recommend this.
