Hi.As I am in Peru we do not have memory map, Anquet etc. The only paper maps here are 1:100 000 which is actually fine for the scale of the terrain. I am uploading route descriptions onto a website to share, at present I just have grid references but would like to add maps that people could actually download and use to navigate.

At present I have lots of co-ordinates stored on garmin e trex. Only problem is reception is not great with it, so lose bits of info and also am considering buying something else rather than paying 35 quid for a cable. At present am transferring data by hand which is too time consuming.

So my question are: 1. any advice on making a google map printable to navigate with and can you annotate with grid numbers to allow to use grid references
2. is the etrex noted for bad reception, and if so what is better.
3. is there still a good gps logger perhaps that would do the job whilst being more compact and using less batteries ( there are some long trips here)
4. am I better off just scanning and annotating a copy of the peruvian equivalent to os maps?

lots of questions so thank you for any advice

I'd suggest sticking with WGS84 lat/long references, or using whatever local mapping grid system is used in Peru (assuming there is a national grid system of some sort in Peru).

Does the Garmin offer you a grid system setting for Peru (like it offers OSGB36/OrdSrvy36 for the UK)?  This might indicate that a Peruvian national grid does exist.

Which Etrex model are you using?  There are a lot of models in that family.

If you provide route files in GPX or KML form, it will be possible to pull them into GoogleEarth.  Also, a tool like GPSBabel will enable a user to convert to a wide number of route formats.

Mapping is usually protected by copyright, so providing it on your website might be breaching copyright law; you'll  have to check and decide on that for yourself.

The only resource I've got bookmarked for Peru is this one:

http://www.allthemountains.com/

And there is a brief history of datums and mapping at the site given below (I have no idea if it is valid or not):
