My eTrex Keeps Turning Itself Off

I am generally happy with my eTrex. However, it randomly turns itself off. Apparently, this is a known problem for some units. I think I have excluded loose/low spec batteries. In fact on my last trip it turned itself off twice when I was stationary.

One of my prime reasons for getting the eTrex was to record track logs. Something which can't be relied on to stay turned on is pretty useless for recording track logs.

So any suggestions for a replacement? I don't need maps, but a USB interface would be better than a serial one. Also it mustn't depend on software that only runs on Fenestrated operating systems, or Crapple. Basically it should work with gsbabel.

Try cleaning the battery contacts with a rubber or alcohol; might be a build up of residue?

Can't see any obvious build up, but will try that. The switch offs are very random. Sometimes I can go for a couple of weeks without getting one. However, it's got to the stage that if it's something I really want to record a track log for, I have to keep checking the device to make sure it hasn't switched off.

I had a similar problem with my Geko and it was the contacts; yours might of course be something else entirely.

I use one of these as a GPS tracker; works very well: the igotU 200e

Garmin now have the eTrex 10 out which has USB interface and now 1000 waypoints can be saved.

As to whether they've fixed the problems of the waterproof seal coming loose after a few hundred hours of use and the occasional on/off powers they seem to have?

This one over £100.

It would be handy if waypoints had the date/times stored when recorded, track info (dates) not being lost when stored/condensed from the current log to the saved log. Anyone know if they've refined/improved all those aspects - Memory is so cheap now!!!!!!!

Assuming that cleaning the contacts doesn't work, I think I'll wait a few months and see how the new generation of eTrex's pan out. Kate's eTrex sounds attractive, but if I am going to get another GPS I want to get away from the serial interface.

Thanks Diddy - still looking out for your dad!

Didn't get that weekend at Sykes - sometime perhaps?
