Monday Tip - Put A Cap On It!
Saddled with a floppy-peaked shell jacket? Here's a simple solution when the going gets gnarly.

There are so many functional alternatives, which may even represent local fashion, tradition and heritage

I have some floppy waterprrof hoods and tried waterproof cap underneath. It is a hack, no way as good as a wired peak because

  • movement drags water from the peak to the inside of the hood
  • cinched hood pulls the peak down
  • cinched hood, the peak is wider than you need, and  makes a gap to the sides of the face where rain runs in
  • you end up not cinching the hood and then have a gap all around the face and neck for rain to run in. Not a problem when horizontal windless rain.

For mountain conditions I'd recommend buying waterproof jacket with a decent hood with wired peak.

My goretex cap works fine under the hood of my Velez smock.

A tilley hat is a bit more of a challenge under a hood. A baseball cap is generally better i find for keeping the wet off me specs.
Mine is the paramo version which allows you to only need the hood when you're finally fed up with the novelty of water down the neck.

I used to be anti Baseball Cap

But, I started wearing a baseball cap under my hoods a few years back, and, being a specs wearer,  found it transformed my wet weather hillwalking experience. Way better than the 'mountain caps' I'd worn previously

The 'you should get windsreen wipers for those' "jokes" have almost completely ceased due to the added protection the cap gives me.

And, I find the Montane litespeed hood unwearable without a cap -

My usual winter headwear now is baseball cap supplemented with a buff  - if it's any colder, then I'll be wearing  warm hood as well

My main issue with baseball caps is that most of them seem to be quite shallow at the rear and unless you have very short hair, won't stay on so well.  I dread the day when I lose/destroy my current one.

I'm with Mole and Parky, as a wearer of specs, I've found that a Pro Shell baseball cap is the only way I can keep good (safe) vision when in heavy rain. This is especially true over wet, bolder terrain, where confident foot placement is a must.

I'm not usually one for things on my head but, if you also wear specs, I'd highly recommend this (relatively) cheap piece of headgear.
