Afternoon all, Just a quickie to say hello to you all and introduce myself... I'm Patrick, an exiled Englishman living in the Irish midlands (the flat wet bit). Just turned 40(!) and am recovering from a nicely broken femur. Stay off the motorbikes kids! Anyway, just been discharged by the consultant after a year, so need to get back out there and on the hills. Got to do a lot of work on fitness and physique (or lack of) first though. Wish me luck. Patrick.

Thanks for the welcome guys - as I sit here now the rain is lashing in against the windows in true Irish fashion. This time last year we were under snow and ice and i was on crutches so I guess this is an improvement? Originally from Sheopshire, my background is that of a lot if UK walking, especially while at school and college in Yorkshire, Newcastle and Carlisle, so I would spend a lot of weekends in the Lakes, Dales and Pennines. Did the C2C with a mate after A-Levels did it in 10 days camping all the way with waaaay too much kit. Only one wet day though My wife reckons she wants to do the C2C too so we have a target to meet now. Anyone want to babysit three kids (7months to 11 years) for us? Any way... See you out there if these clouds lift! Patrick.

Hi PapaL welcome to OM I've got rain running down my windows as well ( Wester Ross ) windy too , not as bad as sometimes though, Perhaps we'll get a shorter winter this time .

Hi Papal, Welome to OM from a fellow islander, up north. Rain lashing down here to, Belfast. Keep an eye on OM, myself and another guy called Stephen, (ex-pat from Cork), regularly try to arrange meets in Ireland, both North and South. We had one arranged for last weekend in Galtees, due to other commitments no one else could make it. We went anyway. We maybe organising an other for Jan. and/or April. Paul. I can sympathyise with you on leg injury. I wrecked my knee in March on an OM Winter Skills course. I've just been 'signed off' also. So I need to build up strength I lost in leg too.

Hiya Papa, Good to hear from you. As Husky mentioned I am from Cork. I am moving to the US (from Belgium) at the end of Jan so Husky and I are hoping to have another meet, there is a also a meet in McGillacuddy Reeks planned for April. There are some great Hill Walking clubs in your neck of the woods which have meets most weekends. All the best, Stephen

Hiya Papa. I'm from Belfast, too, but spend too mucn time in London. I envy you being in the midlands - you're not far away from all sorts of wonderful places, including my adored Mayo and Donegal. There's no doubt that walking is a great way to recover from leg/hip surgery. Welcome!

 hello and welcome

Stay on the motorbike, surely, I bet you had your problem coming off one. I'd not have fractured my patella if I'd stayed on my bike....

Patrick, If you turn on the Personnel Message setting it means I/we could talk to you easier, regarding meet/plans, after we know, where/what is planned. That means we don't always have to post things on open forum. Not that it matters much, open forum means everyone knows and are welcome to join in. Paul. NN, know what you mean!! If I'd stayed on, would not have had to get pins and plate in ankle and broken wrist. Or be run over by Post Office van!! PO vans fault, turned left from outside lane without indicating, I and it where in traffic jam at time, so I was only edging forward by @ 2m, not really moving!!!

Paul, I've turned the PMs on now, so feel free to message me re. any meets... Be warned though - I'm getting back into this malarky, so am no mountain goat yet! My femur was the victim of a nice slow high-side into a peat bank just down the hill from Sally Gap. I reckon if I hadn't instinctively stuck my foot out to "save it" I'd have had a relatively soft landing and been a bit bruised and shaken instead of this... As for everyone else - thanks for the welcome! See you out there... Pat.
