Delighted by all these offers, but not sure if any of you guys are hot Simon, I think 28th December sounds just fine I'm perfectly happy to doze / read / listen to music / think and then sleep on a winter camp.

MK, only want to keep you warm Iv'e heard about how cold you can get, we can use the 'buddy' system. IE, cuddle up to to both get warm, I'll be the front 'spoon', you'll be the back. That way you'll "be safe"

 Hmmmmmm, you don't fart then.

Oh, I 'run' very hot, last trip in Galtees, was below 0c, I had to take some base layers off as was to warm, (-9c bag).
I would say you ran 'very hot' if it was a +9 bag, not a -9 bag.

Thank all of you for giving me so many wise ideas about camping in winter. I will make a detailed plan latter. Thank you very very much!!!

Simon D - as MK says. Pick your nights, perhaps go for a moonlit walk? Good to get out anyway, to warm you up. But books do it for me (and hot women, of course) - there's something very therapeutic about lying in your pit with a good book, ignoring all the other issues and difficulties you may face elsewhere. Also, spread your meal courses. Tea when you stop, read/doze/, soup, read/doze, main course etc. I camped in Torridon in late November in my early days of this game, with a GF. Dark terribly early. We found we'd nod off after tea (around 5) then wake up and sometimes end up having supper very late indeed, splitting the night. It was when Glasgow had its coldest night in 106 years, I think. My tent had a valance and froze to the ground - had to leave it as each rock had about a foot of ground frozen to it. Went off to Craig and retrieved tent a week later once thawed.

There is clearly room for a commercial venture pairing up cold campers with hot campers

I knew a mate who could kayak in the middle of winter wearing a short sleeved dry cag and bare hands despite it being about -5C with strong winds, hail, sleet and snow!! He set off with a full sized dry cag and base layers and shorty wetsuit but had to stop to take the base layers off and drop the shorty to his waist and change into a short sleeved cag!! He was still too hot!! I reckon he'd just about be suitable to pair up with Kate!!

Well my first winter wildcamp was supposed to be the Black Sail weekend last year... in a tarp and bivvy bag!! Needless to say I chickened out. I'm thinking of camping out this NYE near a pub or two and my car in case of emergencies. I will be using my car camping tent (vango spectre 200) with two or three CCF mats laid out across the tent. On top of these I'll put a 3/4 TAR on top of a full length TAR on top of the CCF mats. I think that will give me comfort and enough underneath insulation I need. I will also have a sleeping bag which has down inner layer and primaloft outer layer to it. This is the MArmot fusion 30 which is down to -7C comfort temp rating. I will also take a golite quilt 3 season (rated to comfort temp of -7C) to use as a pillow and extra layer if I get cold. Both of these are XL which not just gives me the length I need to snuggle right inside the bag/quilt but also gives me extra girth which will allow me to layer up inside it without compressing the down which I believe can reduce the bag's effectiveness. Remember the bag's insulation is more effective than what you will put on as it covers the whole body and is designed to keep you warm when stationary. I think it is sometimes more effective to take off warm but bulky clothing when in your sleeping bag than to leave it on but with the sleeping bag down being compressed and not working as well. Some disagree with that but it is my experience to take off layers to warm up when in a down bag. Anyway, have fun. Talking of which it is better to have someone else in there with you too share body heat. It really does work that buddying up thing.

That started as MY idea MK!! Still, we could split the profits 51/49%, larger percentage my way, as was my original idea.

only one person in this thread mentioned condensation. keep your tent totally vented else you will wake up with a wet sleeping bag and no way to get it dry.

Now we are talking the winter camping travel, so how to choose the camping travel equipment?
