The Cairngorm mountain co. have been angling for years to have the restrictions imposed as a condition of their planning consent/funding lifted - even to the extent of harrassing summer walkers and tourists with "surveys" loaded with - well - "loaded" questions.
Oh ... and as for the Mars bars - I was born in Scotland and have lived here for all of my 50+ years and have yet to see an deep-fried Mars bar let alone eat one. An invention of English newspapers maybe?
Ooh, no - they're relatively common. You've got to ask for them specifically though. They're not generally out on display with the healthy stuff like deep fried haggis and deep fried pizza.
The DFMB is not that common these days, but it was very definitely not a creation of newspapers. It was more a fad of the early/mid 90s. A pal used to get them moderately regularly at chip stops on the way to/from the hills and I had a bite of one: not nearly as bad as it sounds, but too sweet for me to want to eat a whole one (much the same way I feel about a Mars bar without batter and frying, as it happens).
Deep fried pies and pizzas far more horrifying IMHO, and still readily available. The "healthy vegetable grill" the above friend once requested in Pitlochry was the nadir. It certainly wasn't grilled, almost certainly wasn't healthy and may or may not have involved vegetables...
