Hi all I stumbled on this site whilst looking for more information on sink and swollow holes, and have gained some usefull information but am still needing a little help I've been walking a fair while in the uk but would not call myself an experienced hill walker just yet, I'm hoping to take a few palls on a two day walk through the brecons, my route planning and navigation are not too much of a problem but i'd like to use a cave as an overnight stay.
I've noticed some areas with caves in a broad area around and mainly north of Mynydd Llangynidr and Mynydd Llangatwg on OS explorer OL13 but this area is peppered with sink and swollow holes which I've not come accross before so I'm wondering if they are best avoided and if so if any one could perhaps suggest an alernative anywhere within the brecons black mountain/mountains area.
I have backpacked in the Western Beacons a bit and Sink Holes are very prevelant, the are mostly easy to spot and avoided.
On an OM meet last year in the Beacons visibility dropped to about 5 meters and we where trying to navigate to a large sink hole and we could not find it, but it turned out it was so big we where in the middle of it.
Metric Kate, Simon Chaplin and Mal Mawr know the area much better than me so they will be able to offer some alternate locations.
Yep, what Sworldy says, avoid caves in sinkholes unless you're an experienced caver. Many of the cave entrances in sinkholes are locked by gratis anyway. You could try to find Chartists' cave on Llanginidr and spend the night there, but personally I'd camp. The only easily accessible caves I've been in in the Brecon Beacons, usually when Bodying for SARDA, stink of piss.
Thank you all for your replies they're very helpful.
Part of the plan was to keep pack size/weight down.
I'm gradually buying more expensive gear as i go along, but at the moment my kit (especially tent) is a bit weighty, it sounds like I'll have to put up with it though.
