Greetings all, I recently purchased some smartwool socks for fishing etc and really liked them, bar the price that is!!! I am niw looking to purchase some for work,my problem is I work within a factory which is quite warm and work on a track(hard floors) at the end of the shift my feet are killing and on fire!!!! Basically my ques is do smartwool-merino wool type socks work aswell in warm environment as they do a cold and would I benefit from them. Ideally the sock would vent well and maybe offer some more protection to the sole of my feet.would you use the smartwool brand for this instance or is there better products that will deliver what I'm looking for in this instance
This may or maynot be of use to you Richard. My partner works in an industrial enviorment, walking back & forth along a large machine. Many of the operators complain of foot ache at the end of each day. A few of them decided to make insoles for thier boots to hopefully reduce the fatigue.
Take a cork flooring tile as the body of your 'insole', glue a piece of cotton sheet/rag to one side and let dry - silicone sealer works, rest a telephone directory on top to make a firm stick. Draw around boot insole, cut out with stanley knife, refit 'new' cork piece into boot. Personally he says he found these to be a good insulator against, vibration, foot slap, cold and heat. I'm not saying they will be best footbed but certainly improved his quality of life for very little outlay.
Lidl do a good 'gel' inner sole in their 'specials' deals. It appears about ever 6 months. I use them to reduce volume in boots that are too big but they do a good job of cushioning each footfall - good for walking on hard surfaces, in my case out and about around the local lanes.
Martin I've just ordered them at £7.90 which was a steal really (on special offer)so I've gone with the phd light crew.
Whilst on the subject of socks, could someone give me a short brief on the benefits of using linear socks with a good winter sock,I was recently in go outdoors and a guy in the recommended the bridgedale linears.which ones are considered to be the "best"
I work in a factory too, Richard, and wear merino socks all the time. More for their anti-stink properties in steel toe-cap shoes.
I only wear liner socks in stiff winter boots, as my feet can slide a bit more. The liner helps against friction, that causes blisters. I haven't worn stiff winter boots for years though.
Thanks for the great feedback once again guys,I will try the suggested methods and see what works best for me at work with the suggested methods,I may even go to the lengths of trying a merino on one foot and a supermarket special on the other lol.im quite happy to try a few different socks as I know these will get used within my fishing though the spring/summer/autum months
I have thought about some gel pad insoles but this is probably saved for another thread
With reguards to the linear socks these will be used for my winter fishing,do these really add that little extra warmth in the cold months.
Thanks once again for all the insight guys and gals it sure does beat buying blind.
