Is there a UK source for Carbon felt?
(as used for a wick in meths stoves: I don't like the idea of fibre glass).

Is it the same as black "plumbers cloth"?

I searched for it a couple of years ago, but couldn't find a UK source. Maybe the name is different in the UK?

I ended up buying some from this site. I work in engineering, and have intended to speak to the guys that do our 'heat treatment', but haven't got around to it.

A pack of roll-up paper for cigaretts also uses. Just roll up a cigarette paper (a thin rolled op cylinder of paper). Put it upright in a meth cup and light it at the top.

another trick is a piece of cotton thread knotting around the uper rim of your meth cup. drench it in meth and light it.

The 'carbon felt' does more than wick, Zuma. It doesn't burn, and actually holds the meths. You can pick up the stove whilst lit, and it doesn't spill.

Do you class the mostly recycled glass loft insulation as fibre glass?

Cheap as chips & from a short test I did looks promising.  If you want some let me know & I'll post an envelope full out to you - I have a roll to insulate the dog pen & it's more than I need.

Some folk have reported problems using fibre glass, Ross. Don't scratch your eyes, or go for a pee without carefully cleaning your hands after using it.

What about sheeps wool loft insulation?

Won't burn and melt like cotton wool etc and is completely natural and free from chemicals.
I'm sure a local builders merchant would let you have small sample to "show the customer".

Zelph seems to like wool insulation from scavenged Origo marine alcohol stoves:

I have found this 100% wool wadding at conrad:
http://www1.conrad-uk.com
Part number 329193 - 89
(Insulating material made of sheep's wool)

Not ordered any yet

Bahh the sheeps wool didn't work:

CP suggested that zelph might have meant other wool, and on asking on zelphs forum, yes, the Origo wool was ceramic wool.
