Hey, I'm located in stoke and trent, and I want to get out to the hills more. So basically I'm looking for the cheapest way to get to lakes/snowdonia.
Snowdonia is looking more likely as lakes I have to go through manchester. So I was wondering whether anyone has any experience getting there by public transport?
I could just train all the way to Betws-y-coed, but that is quite a long trip.
I'm thinking maybe train to chester and then try to bus over, but I can't seem to find any timetables (I don't really know where to look)
But really I would like to get opinions, ideally I would like to find my way to like capal curig or llanberis.
Thanks
Andrew

you might be better getting the train to Bangor then a bus...but I seem to remember (but cant find) a similar thread where is became obvious that using a bus isnt as simple as it should be

Thanks, I'm looking at getting to Bangor (is easy enough) but looking at the buses they don't seem to go that often to llanberis or capal curig. Or is there another destination I would be better of going to? (I'll have to arrive friday evening/sat morning and leave sun afternoon)
Cheers

Someone else who knows the area will happen along - but your difficulty seems familiar from the other thread.

You can change at Llandudno and get the train to Betws y Coed or other station on the way to Blaenau.

The buses from Bangor to Bethesda are quite frequent.

Have a look at the Welsh Highland Railway too.

Having played with the online train thing, the key to managing the cost to the Lakes seems to be advance tickets/slightly odd times of day. A day trip on Saturday the 11th of Feb say with 7:13 start and 20:00 return is only about 20 pounds as two singles. Maybe then + a bit for the buses, although can do walks from Windermere.

Mid Wales does seem like the most tempting option mind - actually entirely managable as a day trip, never mind weekends. And plenty of very good hills!

Chirk say is 2 hours and about 15 pounds by train and its right next to the Berwyns. Also Church Stretton (Shropshire hills) @~2 hours and 30 pounds.

I recall a previous thread where it was stated that using Northern Trains via Manchester to the lakes was cheaper than Virgin on the West Coast line via Crewe.  It may even be cheaper if you cover the Journey in two tickets one Stoke to Manchester the other Manchester to the Lakes.  National Express produce a useful boolket with all the major locations served from Stoke on Trent its available at the First Travel Offices in Newcastle or Hanley Bus Stations.  These offices will also issue a ticket.
