We may be going back to the Fannichs in early Feb, last there when Nest was still a good house (1987). Wondering about sheltered sites to use for several days, perhaps in the area of Nest? I appreciate people may not want to publicise favourite spots so perhaps PM me if so?
When we were there before, the owner of Nest (a Mr Wilson, I think) asked us to come in from the north, over the 600m pass, rather than to take a car or to walk past Fannich Lodge. Does anyone know the position with this access now, or have a contact there? Also, if one was able drive in, how likely is it that snow is cleared off the track? Does anyone live there? I have visions of the car being stuck there for some weeks!
Yes someone stays at Fannich Lodge all year. I've never known anyone who has had permission to drive there. Cars are normally left in the layby opposite the entrance. It's a long way to the Lodge and I think most use a cycle. It would be hard going in snow and ice unless you have a Land Rover and even then with drifting snow the access road may be blocked.
Thanks Lindsay, useful info. Looks like the pass again then! I have snow chains, but not much use in 3 ft drifts...
Any suggestions on camp sites near Nest - is the ground any good?
Also, I drew in a bridge on my old map where the path crosses the Allt Leac a Bhealaich but don't know if it's still there. It's not on my ViewRanger map.
I haven't been in that particular area. The nearest point was the ascent of the Graham, Beinn nan na Ramh. My recollection was there was an estate track round the west end of Loch Fannich but it looked pretty boggy from the distance. I've also come off the south ridge of the Munro, Sgurr nan Each but that was several years ago.
If there are no other responses you could consider phoning the gamekeeper at Fannich Lodge. The keepers are a lot friendlier these days and he may be able to give you the information you seek. He might even let you drive up the private road although I'm sure he wouldn't want that to be publicised.
