It would be well worth checking a more reputable local source for information. The BBC causes a lot of grief and strife around the world by over-hyping its news reports of 'disasters'. The BBCs reporting on a forest fire on the Canary island of La Palma, for instance, caused a lot of damage to tourism on the island, and I gather from local comments that they'd beat the lights out of anyone claiming to be from the BBC for the forseeable future.
I did trawl the net and the stories seem to say the same thing. Interesting cause - someone burning loo paper. It's a real no-no there! The Chilean authorities are trying to clobber the culprit but he has no money. But worth bearing in mind. They're taking it very seriously.
What I can't establish is where the fires are, what area is burnt. But awful, too, for anyone with tickets booked, or there now. It was the last part of our month long trip, saved to the end to reduce risk of the JG pass being difficult. Had we lost more than two days then, the main focus of the trip would have been rather stuffed! In the event, however, it was the Isla Navarino part which was the highlight, no-one seen for five days, and we could camp where we liked. Stunning scenery too.
So if anyone finds their plans for T de P badly affected, head beyond the Beagle Channel! But be aware that route finding can be difficult at times, certainy in early Nov before it got used more. You are very much on your own there - love it. Simpest and quickest to fly to Puerto Williams from Punto Arenas.
Just googled for area affected - see link. One post says park will be closed thru Jan. But it would appear that the area to the east should be ok re fire, and that's some of the best walking, once you get away from the hoards on the 'W'.
