My corner of the midlands is pretty flat - the Peak District is nearly two hours drive, the Lake District nearly four, north Yorks about three. Even the Malverns are over an hour away. Nonetheless, I try to walk a couple of miles every day and five to ten miles at least twice a week (I'm lucky in that I'm semi-retired). There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways radiating from my village and, within easy walking distance, green lanes. an old railway and a canal towpath. So rather than wishing I could get out more it's a case of wishing I could get to the hills more.

I should get out more. I'm now off crutches and can manage upto about 2hrs at a stretch. I live in a lovely place with plenty of good routes from the door. I am very lucky I know.
What really gets me is that, in my village street of about 2 dozen houses, (-mostly well heeled post-family folks living in 3/4 bed houses!!) -only 2or 3 actually EVER go out and enjoy the surround countryside. I hear all you folks, who would love to be where these folk live, and would appreciate it properly. The world seems all upside down and unfair, and I just wish I could wave a wand and put it right!!
- Rant over.

.jpg) Most people can find a reason/excuse not to get out. It's a question of priority I suppose. I take a two hour walk every day but Wednesdays. On Wednesdays I leave home 6-7am.return between 5--7pm.and have done this for years. Three four times a year I'm in Scotland for two weeks backpacking trips. I'd like to do more but the wife gets a bit niggly at times. I live an hours drive from the Derbyshire Peak District. Cheers.

Unfortunately work is a priority bar weekends, bank holidays & just 27 other days I can take off. GOF - if that's the case he must have retired in his 30's or earlier!

Waldo's a legend. I think he's been retired for almost as long as I've been alive and he's still going on fortnight long backpacking trips to Scotland! I just hope I can do an overnighter when I retire (given that I probably won't get to retire til I'm 70 anyway )

I didn't backpack at all last year due to b@st@rd arthritis in my foot and only did one day walk in February. It was painful being on my feet for more than a couple of hours just standing in a river fishing, never mind backpacking. Still, I'm now getting more good days than bad recently and I'm determined to get out there this year.

There are clearly a lot more of us wrinklies in the hills than I'd realised. (Perhaps someday soon the patronising may stop - not that there's any on this forum, I hasten to add) As I stride slowly and carefully into my eighth decade, my aim is more backpacking not less. For me the 'moment' was when an impatient teenage driver ran over my right leg and ankle in his rush to get past. 12 days in hospital in your late sixties helps to put a lot of things into perspective. The Olympics, for example: clearly the only way to celebrate them is to spend the entire duration wildcamping in the Highlands.
