Hi all done a quick search on here and it looks like i have done a bad thing and got my down jacket wet (not totally soaked it had just started to get through the thin bit where the "baffles?" are stitched.. Forecast a cold dry night with the chance of frost HA!

Anyhow shoved it in the tumble drier on cool as the label says and shook it every 10 mins or so (only took it about 30 mins to dry)

I have got my hands on some nickwax twin pack of down wash and proofer . Not with the intention of making it waterproof but to reduce the risk of the down clumping as i hve seen it called on here

Now my jacket is said to be machiene washable but I it take it would be safer to hand wash?

With the jacket been new and clean is there any benifit in using the "wash" stage first or should i just go straight in with the proofer?

And any tips on drying out after been totally soaked from this wash?

Is it best to spin dry in a pillow case or anything?

also when tumble drying am i best to totally dry or leave it with a bit of moisture and letting the last bit evaporate in the airing cupboard?

its 80:20 down:feather mix if that makes a difference

If you haven't washed it, and have only dried it like you say, then there's no really need to wash/proof it unless it's dirty.

The main thing with down jackets is drying, if it's dry now and has dried without clumping then there's no problem.

If down garments aren't dried properly, the down can start to rot and begin to smell unpleasant. Additionally clumping together of down can lead to cold spots where there's no insulation left.

One tip when drying down items is to make sure you use a large enough tumble dryer, and to put it in with a couple of new tennis balls as well. The tennis balls bounce around inside and helps stop clumping from occurring. You still of course have to check on the jacket regularly, in case sleeves get snagged or anything, but it does work.

The Nikwax Down cleaner and proofer are really only to preserve and reapply the DWR (Durable Water Repellency). That's the invisible coating on the outside of the garment that makes water bead up instead of soaking in. If you splash the jacket with water and it beads up, then it's fine and needs no action (in actual fact the mere act of tumble drying alone helps the existing reactivate the DWR).

Personally, I hand wash with Granger's 30 degree cleaner, and then I spray the outside with Granger's XT Proofer spray before putting in my colleagues giant tumble dryer with tennis balls.

Proofing down... it does improve performance in the wet, but we're talking taking it from being a liability to being not very good.  That's still something, of course, but my impressions of the sleeping bag I treated were it never was quite as good again in normal conditions after I'd treated it.  I haven't treated subsequent bags, and I don't think any of the Usual Suspect downmongers pre-treat jacket or bag fillings and there'll be a reason for that.

Best just to keep downies for dry weather or when they're under cover IMHO, and leave the down as it is so it'll do its job as well as possible when dry.  A wet synthetic insulation will work better than wet proofed down, in any case (because the air space in hollow fibre is inside the fibre, not around it like with down, and that should stay fairly dry).

Pete.
