that assumes you have money in a paypal account. or that you wish to attach your bank account to this online account - mine is attached to a card specifically obtained for use solely online whose balance is closely controlled for security and no hassle - which if you think about it are you sure you want to do that?

i'm only pointing this out as it seems not be to widely known as will affect any interest you have in an item.

So, can someone tell me if transferring money as a gift from money in your account already incurs no charges, will they charge you for using a debit/credit card to transfer money into your account?? I have no knowledge of the workings of paypal but will need to set it up to pay someone. I don't want to attach an account but would be using a debit card that actually has a degree of internet protection / cover. If I paid as a gift directly via the card to the recipient I might get a card. However if I was to transfer a certain amount of money into my paypal account THEN pay the recipient as a gift is that a way around the charges on a car??

If someone can help me I'd be grateful.

Pay by direct transfer out of your own account. You need the other person's sort code and bank account number.

Yes TP if you transfer money first to Paypal account from card then pay via the balance sending as GIFT is free to both but you need to find how long before funds show as available in Paypal some are pretty instant some take a little while.

Just before you click the final send button on paypal it will tell you the amount and also if you or the other party will be charged and how much so if you see a charge backtrack and check what you did.

You would have no cover sending as gift but if the person PM's you their email for Paypal and you add note in payment that it is for (name of item) you are buying on this site then anyone trying to scam would be an idiot as the webmasters here would have to legally provide info of the seller to the buyer when done through proper chanels and also Paypal would be the same so pretty good chance of locating the person and then you can go through legal process to get your money back. Money sat in Paypal is dead money you either buy stuff with it or transfer it to a bank account first gives an address second is even better as it gives a bank acount both easy ways to trace someone.

Don't think the OM team or Paypal will bend over backwards for you if a deal goes sour, the whole selling point of Paypal is buyer protection. You cannot raise a Paypal dispute if you send via a gift, for all they care your gifting somebody some money and that's all, who you give that to is up to you.

There are ways to recover costs, the bank may help but again they're not forced to, then it gets legal and could potentially leave you further out of pocket.

The easiest way round it is for forums to have the proper approach and advise members to take into account the 3.4% in any sales and price accordingly. It's obviously impossible for forum admin folk to police it so it's up to the members how they play it.

Paypal's use of language leaves it far too open if you ask me (not that you want to), the "personal payment owed" could be interpreted in many ways.
