Hi folks, I'm new to this forum.  I have a question for anyone able to answer it.  My tent is a Hilleberg Akto which I've been using for 5 years.  I've never ever been very happy with it as I'm 6ft 4in and find the Akto very claustrophobic inside.  I'm considering buying a more spacious tent soon, one which isn't too heavy for carrying but is roomy inside.  Any ideas?

Maybe have a look at the Tarptent Scarps? 1 & 2.

Or a mid type. MLD Duomid, Trailstar, Golite SL3 etc

I always thought the atko is big enough personally and I'm 6'5" tall. It does surprise me that you find the atko claustrophobic.

Would the scarp 1 be any bigger than the atko?? It seems the same  sor tof size and shape. I wonder if the claustrophobic feeling is down to the slope above the head. In that case perhaps having a tent with the same shape is no better. I'd have thought you will be sacrificing weight for feeling cofortable with the tent. In this case I'd perhaps look at a supalite type of tent from Terra Nova. Perhaps one like the semi geodesic ones. I'd  suggest a tent where the opening is at one end as those tents  generally have the highest point above your head. It will weigh a bit more though.

...and there you have it! Those are actually my exact reasons.  In the Akto the slope is above your head when sleeping and it feels very claustrophobic to me, having the inner just above my face

The end struts arrangement in the Scarp make it feel more spacious. Plus it's taller.

Getting inside the Scarp would be the easiest way to find out, but this may help. The mid strut at the boxed end is 18" high (46cm)Measuring 6'4" at floor level , leaves about 5" at both ends, maybe enough for your sleeping bag.(between the inner and fly you have another 3" or so, the inner is water resistant)Laying down at the 6'4" mark you have about 16.5" above. Where your nose would be, it is about 18".

I just remembered this shot...The mat is a 6'  Exped 7, the MontBell pillow is about 9.5" , so a combined length of about 6'9". At the foot of the mat , you see about 6" of floor space. The fabric inner is exactly the same.BTW, you can attach the MontBell pillow to the Exped. I don't need that extra bit so I just shove something under the Exped to get me the pillow "height".Franco

Plenty more larger tents of sundry sorts too mind: Unna (very nice of course, large but rather pricy and heavy), Helsport (somewhat like an internally larger Akto), Golite, Terra Nova (Light, and the specs are certainly large. The odd review online iirc. You may just want to check the length, although it should be OK.).

Some others plausible online too. For me I couldn't even begin to sit up in an Akto (194cm or so), so it wasn't really an option for long trips. Certainly worth if possible getting inside these things beforehand to see how they feel.

The Helsport can be pictched 'tall' or 'short', giving more headroom. The Ringstind is certainly a fair bit longer than the Akto.

There was a Henry Shires double Rainbow Tarptent on offer yesterday by Jim Lloyd, { I now see its spoken for] that would be plenty roomy enough if you are happy with a single skin tent.
