I am rapidly going even more insane than normal.

Just got Memory Map 5 for the Lakes.  I've plotted out a nice route round the Newlands fells and want to export it to my Satmap Active 10.  But I can't.  Whatever I try, I can't get the MM software to recognise the Satmap device.  The GPS isn't listed under the possible types in the MM menu, but I'm setting it as a generic unit and it still won't recognise it.

Anyone had this problem? Better still, anyone know of a solution?

Save it as a .gpx and export/import that to the Satmap.

ed: thanks, but I've done that.  The problem is the actual connectivity: I get a "can't open COM port" message every time.  Tried connecting to SatSync and the GPS works fine via the USB port.

What connection options do you have in MemoryMap, it sounds like it's looking for a serial connection on a com port.

Is there a way you can simply save the .gpx file and then drop it onto the Satmap using the sync software?

Ah. You'll have to await the Satmap users.....Garmin plays funny with COM ports but probably not the same issue..

Seem to have sorted it, by means of a call to Memory Map Tech Support. MM won't talk directly to a Satmap unit.  No real problem, as I've simply saved my Newlands Fells walk to .gpx and it uploads to the Active 10 no problem.

 Thanks for the help folks.

mapping software doesn't communicate with a satmap. you have to use satmap's satsync software - free to download off their site.

export the route as a .gpx file

open satsync and import the gpx file where you want it to go.

in reverse to get info out of the satmap. convert the .map (satmap's file format) file to .gpx when exporting it and then load that into memory map.

you must connect your satmap to satsync from time to time as this will automatically update any firmware changes.

if you haven't exported anything from your satmap yet be aware that the unit writes trackpoints constantly and i don't think you can vary their rate of recording. the gpx you export will contain thousand of trackpoints (for a reasonable walk possibly 10,000 or more of them in a large gpx file). unless memory map has a point filter (gets rid of extraneous points not required fro the route) you may find using these a bit of fun. tracklogs has a point filter and i can smash the number of gpx points well down - from 10,000 to 300.

Seems odd that you can't drop down the trackpoint number. Is there a limit to how many it would store? I guess you can write them to a file then clear the memory?

the limit is how big a memory card you have in the beastie. a 10,000 point track is around 1mb irc - which is around 8-10 miles worth

it also doesn't stop recording points when you press Stop - that just halts the data screen. you have to save immediately to capture your track without extra bits on the end.

Aha - thanks. Seems a tad odd that it keeps on keeping on...I might have to download the manual!

in fact i've just downloaded saturday's jaunt. saving the route which converts it to satmap's proprietry .map format and exported as a gpx gives a 133k file with 391 points. the raw data gpx is 1.148 mb with 10,433 points.

tracklogs give the first file distance as 17.7km and the second as 18.6km. when the latter is put through the point filter to mash it down to 2m accuracy there are 459 points and distance 17.8km. interestingly they all have more or less the same ascent figure of 360m.
