Hi.

I was reading an article today and wondered about these two qualifications * Mountain Instructors certification.

* Mountain Intructors award

and wondered if:

1) anyone had either / both

2) where I could find out more information about them

I did the old UEL qualification some 25yrs ago, both the hill walking and the top-roping (summer) and have been hill walking since then (9 treks in 2011) and wondered about getting better qualified as I quite fancy a change in career, almost other things.

Thanks

www.mltuk.org will give you the info on the awards you are interested.

Googling JSP419 will give you an idea of where uel sits.

When you do military skills these days, UEL is equivalent to ML (Summer) training, JSMEL is equivalent to ML (Summer).

If you are still in, get yourself on the military courses- you'll save yourself a fortune!!

IIRC...I think..the old UEL is not recognised in the civilian world and, in any case, the demands/syllabus have changed so much (even since I did my ML less than 10 years ago) it isnt going to be relevant.

If you are still enlisted, good advice from si - if not, you may need to think about starting again (and from what I know, having looked at upgrading to MIA, you are way below whats needed for that simply on the climbing).

Agreed. UEL only any good if you're "in".

Just to say if you were to do uel / jsmel these days, you are 'encouraged' to register on the mltuk scheme(s).

HTH?

If you got to do 9 treks in 2011 I would not think about a change of career! Sounds like things are pretty perfect already. Where did you go?

Dientes de Navarino

P Williams - Torro. Only person to make it through in 2011 I was told. Spent 9 days with them - cool!

P Williams -  Wulaia Bay return

3x different treks in Paine National Park

Cerro Castile - short but sweet and likewsie one outside Ushuaia too. Should have committed myself more readily to that one.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-13445300 on both rivers. Thwarted on the P river after a few days due to isolation / vulnerability the difficult terrain and unwillingness of the 2x local landowners.

Harberton estancia circuit - tooth ache cut short this one! 3 operationS later and I have a cap being applied on the 19th Jan.

Lake District x2 - inc' a recce for the Lakeland 50.

Hi Tim.
I have an MIA and and an MIC. Broadly speaking the MIA is the UK based award for teaching summer walking, mountaineering and rock climbing whilst the MIC is the UK award for the same activities in winter.
All of the awards follow a similar route: Prior directly relevant experience, register with one of the MLT boards (England, Scotland, Wales or NI as appropriate), attend a training course, gain further experience and attend an assessment, record ongoing experience and cpd.
The starting point for any of the higher awards includes holding the Summer Mountain Leader award (the award for supervising hillwalking groups on non technical ground in the UK. Whilst your UEL would not be recognised as part of the current process of obtaining this award for people like yourself with extensive experience it is possible to apply for exemption from Training. I would however recommend a refresher as a minimum before Assessment to make sure how you work is in line with current thinkings on good practise.
The MIA and MIC are awards with a large component of climbing and are directly relevant to UK conditions and venues. If you are looking on something more in the trekking line I also hold an IML. This is an internationally recognised award for leading trekking parties in 'rolling Alpine terrain' (non glaciated) 'without the tools of alpinism' (i.e. the leader can carry an axe but the group would not normally be expected to carry one or crampons, likewise ropework would be simple emergency ropework or that needed for short sections of chains or other fixed gear on otherwise walking routes- not Via Ferratta). More details here: http://www.baiml.org/
For the UK based awards as the other poster said the MLTUK website is the place to go. This chart shows how the awards fit together: http://www.mltuk.org/awards.php

Oh and there's some great trekking in Patagonia isn't there? I worked for Raleigh in Region XI for a while and took a youth expedition to South Georgia and Antarctice for the Millennium but some of the best stuff I did was around Ushuaia and in the Cordon Navarro on Tierra Del Fuego.
