Hi all,

Due to my location, I have the usual dilemma of not being able to try boots on..

I am keen on a pair of Scarpa ZG10 GTX but would be interested to know if anyone has a pair and if so what the sizing is like?

I know the rule is not to buy boots until you have tried them on, but it's really not possible

If you buy from the likes of Cotswolds, Tiso, etc. They will give you a certain amout of time to make sure you are 'happy' with boots.

As long as you don't wear them outside!!

It can also be worth going up a 1/2 or full size in boot to make sure your feet, toes, have enough room to expand and when going down hill toes don't bash against toecap.

If you're going to the sort of place where you need walking boots you'll probably have shops nearby that sell them.  So wait until a trip is one option.

Pete.

I have bought boots on line before no problem and there is usually a good retunr policy if you are unhappy with the size. I always check before I order though.

Also, what Didster and Huskyman said about tmaking sure there is space for toes, swelling feet and thick socks. I have made the mistake of buying boots that fit perfectly in the shop, just to use them on the first trip to find out my swelling feet didnt fit!

Thank you all so very much for your positive/constructive responses.

I have decided to go for a Euro 43 which is 3/4 of a size bigger than a UK 8, so plenty of room for expansion.

I have also spoken with Scarpa today who have suggested these if I need to reduce any excess volume:

If anyone else has any suggestions that would be great.

I have always found that Scarpa seem to match Uk sizes fairly well. If you remember that a Euro size is 3/4 of an English size and 42 = 8 you can go from there.

Brasher also sell so called volume adjustors available in the likes of Go Outdoors.  I use some thin full length "flat" gel insoles that Aldi have sold as "Special Buys" on a regular basis.  Being Gel means they also give extra shock absorption but at a small extra weight penality.  If you go for support insoles such as superfeet or the like they are normally thicker than the original factory insoles so in themselves are also volume reducers of sorts.

Most of the after market footbeds are thicker than the Original Equipment.

The like of Superfeet, Sorbothane, some of the Scholl ones from Chemists, etc.

Most of the well know 'outdoor' brands are desinged not just for support, but also to help reduce 'foot strike' and make walking more comfortable. Thay's why they have the gel, etc.

the best way to see if a boot is the correct size is to remove the footbed from both boots, stand on them with your heel flush to the bach of the footbed (not over hanging) and stand up... you should have one fingers width of space from your toes to the edge of the footbed, less and your toes will hit going down hill, more and your heel will slip as you walk.
volume adjusters can be used (place it under your footbed), tounge depressors can also be used (these push your heel into the boots heel cup better) also different lacing techniques can help.

but at the end of the day you will need to try them on as different shoes are made using different lasts and therefore different widths.
