I know the Peak District is out of bounds for wild camping.

That said, however, I am after tips for good spots to go where I can take my camping gear out for some outdoors rambling where I am unlikely to be disturbed. (I pitch late and break camp early).

I was thinking Kinder Scout area but am open to suggestions.

Top of Kinder, depending on your love/hatred of peat.
Whinstone Lee Tor above Ladybower.

Done both, no hassles from anyone provided they don't catch you in bed at 1030 in the morning.

Train to Edale for the first, train to Hope for the second. ( I think.)

I've never camped up there so can't vouch for this from personal experience, but I have heard a number of reports of rangers patrolling the plateau on summer evenings and moving campers on.

I'm hoping to be left alone in February.  I try to be as discreet as possible.

I found the Rangers are a lot like the Old Bill. Some are just in a bad mood, some are fine if you're OK with them. My mate was found in midsummer by a roving Ranger, who had a ten minute discussion about the relative merits of Macpac and Terra Nova tents and then went on his way.
From what I've seen and heard it seems to be other people who grumble, leaving the Ranger little choice but to enforce the rules.
