Carter Bar is as good a way as any to come by road.  The big roads East and West just have a "Welcome to Scotland" sign by the road and that's it.

It's not really a detour as the 68/697 cuts more directly to Edinburgh than the A1, then up the M90 and A9 from there and you'll get one of the World's Coolest Bridges right next door as you cross the Forth.

Dere Street, over the Cheviot Hills, barred to vehicles, so no problem with speed limits.

I was up there the other day when it was still frozen solid!

I go from the coast in Northumberland up to Scotland about once a month and nearly always go via the A697/68. You cross the river Tweed at Coldstream with signs at either side. Coldsreams a good stopping point when you've got kids as they have clean toilets. At Greenlaw you cross the river Blackadder which gave the name to the TV series...for those of us that remember the fist one set in the wilds of Northumberland. I keep telling my daughter this but she shows no interest at all!
